Through a “Public Records” request, I have confirmed the following 13 on-track (racing or training) deaths at Emerald Downs in 2014: 5-year-old Pretty Darn Good, Feb 15, training, “neurological” 2-year-old Diamonds n’ Demons, Apr 23, training, humerus fracture 2-year-old Chow…
I have confirmed that 5-year-old She Be Bunny, a “went bad, pulled up, vanned off” Saturday at Penn National, was euthanized post-race. She was trained by Timothy Kreiser and owned by Robert Derr. Next horse up – this is horseracing.
The following horses were casualties on American tracks last week. This list, however, includes only raceday victims, for while I’d prefer a more complete reckoning, the training carnage, with but two exceptions (NY, Cal), is almost entirely covered up. Reported…
4-year-old One More Chief is dead after breaking down while training at Belmont Friday morning. He was raced 14 times, most recently at Finger Lakes in November. He is the 7th NY horse killed on-track through the first 16 days…
The California Horse Racing Board has confirmed the deaths of two more racehorses: 2-year-old Stuffed Animal, trained by Adam Kitchingman and owned by Lucas Downs, was euthanized after breaking down in a race at Santa Anita January 4th. It was…

At Delta Downs last night, 3-year-old One Step Higher “fell near the eighth pole [of race 3] and was euthanized.” This was the third time that trainer Thomas Nixon and owner Lary Nixon had put their filly to the whip.…
I have confirmed that 4-year-old Sharp Harbour is dead after breaking down in the 4th race at Tampa Bay on January 2nd. Racing calls this collateral damage; we call it killing. Trainer, Robert O’Connor; owner, Steve Zeehandelar.
The following 43 racehorses were killed in action on Ohio tracks in 2014. This list, however, includes only those officially reported to the Ohio Racing Commission – there were surely others euthanized off-site; others, still, who simply fell through the…

In the 7th race June 1st at Thistledown, Reno Star “returned bleeding from the nostrils.” At that same track three weeks later, the Joshua Faulkner-trained mare once again “returned bleeding from the nostrils.” She has not been heard from since.…
