The NYS Gaming Commission says 5-year-old Renaldo N was killed in the 7th race at Yonkers Monday. The dead horse’s exploiters: Shane Tritton, Lauren Tritton.
In the weekly harness rulings, this for driver Justin Vincent at Shenandoah Downs May 2: “Driver Justin Vincent was found to have a blood-alcohol concentration exceeding the limit permitted under Virginia Racing Commission regulations during routine breathalyzer testing. As a result, Mr. Vincent was removed from all programmed drives and is hereby assessed a fine of $250.”
Besides the obvious here – a drunk harness driver – why is any amount of alcohol in the system “permitted”? Speechless.

In both states of New York and Virginia, jockeys and harness racing drivers are allowed to have a Blood Alcohol Concentration of BELOW 0.05% to be considered “not under the influence” or “not impaired” at racetracks.
Drivers of motor vehicles on public streets and roads are in violation AT 0.08% Blood Alcohol Concentration.
It appears that the horseracing commissions in both states of New York and Virginia have slightly higher standards for harness drivers and jockeys than the state laws have for drivers of Motor Vehicles; but the penalties under the state horseracing commissions are much lower than are the penalties for operating motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol on public streets and roads.
$250?! That’s it? If a person was driving drunk and had children in the car, they’d be fined an awful lot than a lousy $250 in NY! Their bail at arrest would be an awful lot more than that! This idiot killed his horse, plus put other horses and drivers at risk of DYING. I’d like to know if the police were called, if any animal abuse charges or charges if at least drunk and disorderly were filed.
Who knows what the horses have been injected with? The people who participate in harness racing do not have to answer to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority or the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit.
I’m not confident that the diehards would be so squeaky clean that they would not stoop to doping their harness racing horses at Yonkers or any other harness racing track in any state.
