In Indiana, Leaving Welts on the Horse Is (Almost) Perfectly Fine

Some recent whip rulings from the world of harness racing:

In NY May 4, “Driver Thomas Merton is hereby assessed a penalty of $100 for excessive use of the whip in the stretch.”

In NY May 4, “Driver Ralph Silvestri III is hereby assessed a penalty of $250 and suspended for 1 day for excessive use of the whip while driving Life in Color (2nd offense in this category in a 365-day period).”

In NY Jul 27, “Driver Ralph Silvestri III [yes, him again] is hereby assessed a penalty of $500 and suspended 3 days for excessive use of the whip in the stretch while driving Little Admiral (3rd offense in this category in a 365-day period).”

In Maryland, Aug 14, “Driver Cole Olsen is fined $100 for whipping out of contention while driving Howboutdemapples.”

Then, these two…

In Kentucky Aug 8, Marvin Alfredo Luna was “assessed a civil penalty of $300 for violation of the whipping rule by leaving welts [horse not named]. The fine was lessoned [sic] due to whipping within prescribed rules of the KHRC.”

In Indiana Aug 17, “While driving Desired Luck, Robert Taylor did welt the horse. For this violation Mr. Taylor is fined $200. Penalty was mitigated because Mr. Taylor was within the IHRC whipping guidelines.”

Once again – here, here, here – “leaving welts,” “welting the horse” are within the guidelines. The Indiana Commission in particular is an obscenity.

  1. This is why these people deserve to have the chance to know what it feels like to be whipped and have welts on their own bodies.
    Horseracing is Animal Cruelty!

    • Maybe the KHRC ,IHRC and drivers should have the opportunity to find out what that whip feels like!!
      HORSERACING IS ANIMAL CRUELTY

      • Yes, all of them in every state deserve a large dose of their own medicine. To me, there is no maybe about it, but I don’t expect it.

    • Wanda-you are absolutely right! Horseracing is animal cruelty. If these people had the chance to know what it feels like to be whipped, perhaps one would hope that they would stop whipping their horses.
