Through a FOIA request to the California Horse Racing Board, I have obtained the following details on some of that state’s kills this year.
Magnolia, Apr 25, Santa Anita T
“Catastrophic humeral fracture – complete, displaced, comminuted; [multiple] ruptures; severe hemorrhage.” Also: had a “surgically-repaired fracture with screw fixation in Aug ’21.” Magnolia had just turned three.
Honey Doo, May 20, Golden Gate T
“Catastrophic tibial fracture, severe hemorrhage and tearing of musculature.” Also: “osteochondral disease.” Honey Doo was two years old and being prepped for her debut.
Urban Dance, May 27, Los Alamitos S
“Got loose on track, turned right, ran off down to barn area, ran head first into barn at full gallop: complete, displaced, comminuted fracture; [multiple] ruptures; massive hemorrhage.” Also: “gastric ulceration.” Urban Dance was three years old.

“Was laid up for a tibia injury from May 14; got cast in stall overnight: tibial fracture, severe hemorrhage and tearing.” Also: “chronic ulceration.” Again, two years old.

Horseracing is INHUMANE TREATMENT OF HORSES. This heinous abuse of horses must be punishable by law as Felony Animal Cruelty because that’s what it is!
This hideous cruelty to horses should not be propped up by government subsidies or government-directed benefits.
Horseracing needs to be recognized as the undesirable and socially unacceptable cruelty against horses that it is! Anyone who engages in these heinous crimes against horses should be arrested for felony animal cruelty.
Don’t allow the perpetrators of horse-abuse, horse-doping and horse-killing to get away with causing harm and death to horses as though they are exempt from the rules of common decency. That would include the Stronach family and the trainers such as Jerry Hollendorfer as well as all of the rest of them who put themselves on pedestals while they are ABUSING, doping/drugging and killing horses for racing and wagering.
Horseracing is not a clean “sport” with a “few bad actors” here and there. The whole business of exploiting horses for racing, wagering and shipping to slaughter is a dirty business that is bad through and through! The morally depraved, horse-abusing, horse-doping, horse-killing, shit-show gambling racket criminal minds of horseracing, which is everyone who is anyone in this abominable industry, will continue to perpetrate abuse and perpetuate lies to cover up their filthy, vile, despicable, disgusting, vomit-worthy, dastardly deeds. It must be stopped!
Aside from the fact that these are all dismal deaths what struck me the most is how awful the death of a horse by running into the barn is. I’ve seen them brush off riders and shove other horses aside but only a horse that is truely terrified heading back to what should be a safe place for them runs head first into the actual barn itself. Literally an act of suicide induced by endless abuse and emotional deprivation . This is racing as you say. What a horrible life these poor horses live.
