In addition to the 99 racing/training kills, there were 27 other horses who perished at NYS tracks last year. While the Gaming Commission terms these “non-racing,” it is our unequivocal position that Racing bears full responsibility for these deaths. (Note how many were simply “found dead” in their stalls.)

“non-racing” in other words horse did not die when it was competing in a race. However, these so called “non-racing” deaths ARE as a result of either being trained and yet to race, finished racing or still active in racing/training and at the same time being a racehorse in the STEWARDSHIP of the racing industry and therefore ARE racehorse death statistics. As much as the New York State Commission prefers to regard these deaths as “non-racing”, it cannot hide behind this utterly ridiculous claim that they were non-racing deaths.
12-year-old Corvo, April 10, Belmont
“ex racehorse found dead in stall-treating colic for one week without resolution”
An “ex” racehorse, well what does that really mean? Decision had been made for it to no longer compete in races, perhaps when it became ill? This is no excuse for the responsibility to the horse to end there. I suspect horse was no longer viable for trainer/owners. Treated for colic for one week??? Obviously no vet was treating it! I cannot bear to think what this horse suffered.
After NEHRO died of colic, the notorious Steve Blasi (assistant trainer to Asmussen) said
“I have seen a lot of shit. THAT IS THE MOST VIOLENT FUCKING DEATH I HAVE EVER SEEN.”

Standardbred Majic Laughter, July 29, Batavia
“found dead in stall-history of colic”
Obviously no vet called in.
Standardbred Superbe Rulah, August 6, Monticello
“horse not feeling well-found dead in stall-suspected acute colic”
Obviously no vet called in when horse displayed it was unwell.
Standardbred Genaro, August 11, Tioga
“colicky-unresponsive to treatment-died next day-ruptured intestine”
Highly likely an obstruction. If it was unresponsive to treatment (supposedly by a vet) then why wasn’t this horse euthanased, putting it out of its misery?
3-year-old Demo, November 7, Finger Lakes
“being treated by vet for lumbosacral neuropathy with rectal/urinary disfunction-developed severe UTI and was found dead in stall” (last raced October 25)
I don’t know this 3 year old’s history but I suspect an attempt was being made to save this horse for future earnings. With the severe condition this horse was suffering why wasn’t the decision made to do the humane thing and euthanase it?
4-year-old Wild Perfection, November 27, Finger Lakes
“horse found dead in stall-unattended death” (last raced October 23)
Those responsible for these deaths have failed in their duty of care to these horses, the racing industry’s much “loved” athletes and allegedly “treated like a member of their families”. I cannot find the words to describe my outrage for the cruelty inflicted on those horses on Patrick’s list that have been left in a helpless state to die a slow and agonizing death with their dignity stolen from them by those persons who are supposed to be taking good care of them.
JUSTIFY THIS, RACING APOLOGISTS!
