Today is Opening Day at Mahoning, and nothing says Opening Day like a kill. In the 2nd – yes, 2nd – race, this for Tuned to the Moon: “pressed the early pace before taking a bad step at the 3/16 pole and was injured, being euthanized on track.”
Clunky grammar aside, the chartwriter tells us this poor girl, just four, was euthanized right where she lay – that is, in full public view of all those “fans” (note: this being a cheap, taxpayer-subsidized claiming track, fans here is synonymous with old, grizzled “horseplayers”). Among the complicit: Stuart Grant, Anthony Farrior, Luis Raul Rivera.

Thanks Wanda. For some reason, I was thinking the horse was a filly.
But I tried searching for Pappa Portmore on the site and nothing came up.
I couldn’t find the filly that burned to death but I did find that a 7-Year-Old Gelding named PAPPA PORTMORE burned to death in a stall at Laurel Park in Maryland on December 6, 2017. Anthony Farrior had claimed him on December 1, 2017 on behalf of owner Super C Racing, Inc.
Anybody who defends this inherent cruelty to horses can call me a hypocrite all day long and it doesn’t change the fact that horseracing is sadistic mistreatment of horses. He/she/they can say that I don’t know anything about horses or horse racing but it doesn’t change the fact that horse racing is inherently sadistic cruelty to horses.
The replay was all sorts of mangled and chopped up, with frozen screens and blips of video mixed in, but it looks, from what little I could see, she was doing well, kept being whipped, started to fall back through the field, but then that was the last I was able to see. So, a horse that was competitive, started to struggle, STILL kept getting hit, is now dead because of it.
Mind you, this is the same trainer who had a filly burn to death in her stall, whom Patrick had posted on awhile ago.
