A Kill at Canterbury; Some Assorted Lame Horses

Haunted Haze made our weekly ambulance report for an “injured past 1/4 pole” in the 5th at Canterbury last Saturday. The stewards pick it up from there: “Haunted Haze went wrong on his left forelimb and stumbled severely…unfortunately, [he] was euthanized for humane reasons.” The deceased was six, and this was his 23rd time under the whip. The complicit: Lothenbach Stables, Homer Duncan, Esteban Martinez, Alonso Quinonez.

Some other notes…

Delaware, Sep 3: Wine Empire was scratched by the Commission Vet for being “lame in the post parade.” Which means unless he was injured in the parade, his trainer brought him to race that day already lame. A few races later, same thing for Migratory.

Hoosier, Sep 5: Senior Partner was scratched by the Commission Vet for being “lame” – this, the stewards note, was his second consecutive vet scratch. See above.

Delaware, Sep 9: Aruma was “claimed” – bought (for only $5K) – prior to her race. But, say the stewards, she finished said race “lame.” Apparently, though, the buyer decided to keep her anyway. This poor girl is seven, and this was her 48th time under the whip.
