Wanda, we think whenever temp. & humidity reaches a score combined of 130 or > all equine activities should be halted. At 70+ years we don`t do farm work at all whenever temp.s & humidity > 130. That`s say a temp of 80 + 50% humidity. Lately on really hot days with humidity we have been doing work such as digging out barn door tracks late in evening just before sun sets & awhile after while we can still see somewhat. Racing horses with temp.s as high as 99F is just plain cruel under any type of humidity.
When people leave their dogs inside their cars in parking lots while they are inside an air conditioned building, the dogs are in extreme danger of heat exhaustion or heat stroke and death. Law enforcement may get involved and they often do.
In horse racing, running a horse in excessively hot temperatures and high humidity is a no-brainer for a high probability of a horse collapsing of heat exhaustion or heat stroke and death. Who cares? The people who claim to “love” horses?
The racing stewards will allow this egregious cruelty to happen right in front of their eyes. Who holds the racing stewards accountable?
