Two Years Old, Very First Race: “Fell: open, comminuted fractures [both front legs].”

Through a FOIA request to the New Mexico Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills at that state’s tracks thus far this year. Note: NM’s recordkeeping has historically been the worst in the nation. While I do believe they have been making an effort to improve, I am sure we are still not getting them all.

Sb Racetrack Romeo, Jan 23, Sunland S
“Colic, died [probably found dead in stall].” Romeo was two and had been raced once.

Omg Its Jess, Jan 28, Sunland S
“Colic, died [probably found dead in stall].” Jess was five and had last been raced Jan 2.

Shame Them, Feb 8, Sunland R
“Open fracture, disarticulated fetlock, complete avulsion.” Shame Them was three.

A Streakin Prada, Mar 14, Sunland R
“Fell: open, comminuted fractures [both front legs].” Prada was two, and this was her very first race. Again, two years old, two shattered legs.

Flower Peach, Mar 14, Sunland R
“Scapula fracture.” Flower was two, and this was her very first race.

Bigg Rush, Apr 2, Sunland T
“Collapsed on gallop out – died before vets arrived.” Bigg was four; this was a Vet’s List workout.

  1. That sounds absolutely despicable and disgusting that not only two horses that are being reported as having colic and died also were reported as “probably found dead in stall” as if the New Mexico Racing Commissioners don’t know and don’t care that these two horses were severely neglected and died in excruciating pain in their stalls unattended by the trainer or owner (or groom) or by a veterinarian!!!!!
It suggests that you can be a complete idiot and barbarian, not attend to the horse when the horse needs immediate veterinary care and still be a “licensed” trainer! It suggests that the stewards could not care less.
What are the stewards doing? Are they heavy drinkers? Are they so wiped out that they don’t do their jobs except maybe when they sober up a little bit? What is their excuse for being so derelict and unconcerned???
