Through a FOIA request to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, I have confirmed the following kills at Prairie Meadows thus far this year.
Sammy Sam Sam, May 21, Prairie T
“[Multiple] fractures.” Sammy was four.
R Too Feisty, May 22, Prairie S
“Severe ulcers, colic – unable to manage pain.” In five “career” races, starting last Nov, R Too finished last or second-to-last each time and a combined 108+ lengths back. In that short time, he was perpetually “For Sale” and actually had to endure four – four – different owner/trainer combinations. He was only three when he died of those “severe ulcers.” A short, miserable life. A horrible death. We who spoke for you are so very sorry.
Awesome Campaign, Jun 13, Prairie T
“Deep rupture with comminuted fracture.” Awesome was four.
Pyc Force, Jun 14, Prairie R
“Flipped in gate: severe, comminuted skull fractures with extensive hemorrhage.” They also noted that Pyc, four, was “blinded” (eye blinders).
Bottle Rockette, Jun 19, Prairie R
“Complete carpal collapse.” Bottle was two.
Jess Sass Home, Jun 21, Prairie R
“Multiple knee fractures – complete collapse.” Jess was three.
Fourlynnes, Jun 25, Prairie S
“Medication reaction – sudden death.” Fourlynnes was three.
Tropic Ruler, Jun 30, Prairie S
“Acute mesenteric rent with secondary jejunal incarceration and strangulation.” Tropic, five, had been raced the previous day: second-to-last, “weakened and never recovered.”
