Recent rulings from the stewards at Laurel Park (all emphases mine):
“On March 8, stable employee Fernando Garcia’s urine sample tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.” License temporarily suspended.
“On March 21, stable employee Emmanuel Sepulveda’s urine sample tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.” Although his license was temporarily suspended, Sepulveda was subsequently “reinstated to good standing” Apr 26.
“Stable employee Jose Zamudio-Hernandez is fined $50 for urinating in a public area on the backstretch” May 8.
“On May 22, stable employee Alejandro Sanchez-Barajas’ urine sample tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.” License temporarily suspended.
“On May 24, stable employee Ricardo Cazarez-Magallon’s urine sample tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.” License temporarily suspended.
And at Delaware last Saturday: In addition to two horses being “vanned off” and a “voided claim” for “unsoundness,” 3-year-old Scanner, the stewards relay, was “reported as having bled.” According to the chart, Scanner was “reluctant to load” and “unruly in the gate,” ultimately finishing 33 lengths back. Perhaps the pulmonary hemorrhage played a role?
And finally, this at Fair Meadows Wednesday:
Daily Gin, says the chart, “stopped early on the backstretch for the second time, walked in far back.” How “far back”? Try 117 lengths. But, as Fair Meadows is subsidized and thus able to pay first-last, Daily Gin’s exploiters – Cindy and Shon Dunlap, among others – still made $210. By the way, this was the 3-year-old’s 4th race; in her previous three, she finished a combined 68 lengths back, with the Dunlaps cashing in each time.
