Two Kills at Santa Anita Yesterday

According to the chart for the 9th at Santa Anita yesterday, Shangrilama “sustained an injury at the wire and was transported off the track via equine ambulance.” Typically, that word combination – injured/ambulance – portends death, and that’s exactly what happened here, with the 6-year-old being euthanized today. This poor girl began her servitude in Ireland before being shipped to the States two years ago.

Also at Santa Anita yesterday, Rambunctious Rylie perished of an unknown (for the time being) cause. She was three. These are dead horses 12 and 13 at Santa Anita this year.

Daniel, you bring up a great point that would be about as “popular” as The Jockey Club attempting to establish a limit of how many mares each stallion could impregnate per year, or how many stud fees a breeding farm could accept per stallion per year. Three major breeding farms in Kentucky challenged that attempt for a rule change. The breeding farms argued on the basis of money showing absolutely no regard for diversifying the gene pool. The Jockey Club was hoping to establish a limit for each stallion in order to diversify the gene pool, but eventually had to back down from the overwhelming opposition from Spendthrift Farms and two other major breeding farms in Kentucky.
    If there was a push to list the number of dead horses each trainer is responsible for causing the death of in the trainer statistics on Equibase, the richest owners who hire the richest trainers would be slapping lawsuits on The Jockey Club/Equibase so fast it would “make your head spin” as the saying goes. You know their lawyers would be salivating over their chance to collect attorney fees as well.
    The last I read, Bob Baffert was responsible for the deaths of seventy-five horses. The main thing is that horses are killed everyday in this industry and the whole shootin’ match is responsible for the daily routine mistreatment and killings of enslaved horses.

  2. I feel deaths should be part of a trainer’s stats on Equibase (which is owned by the Jockey Club).

    What kind of people are these who put profits over the well-being of their horses?
