“Collision, Catastrophic Injury, Euthanized on Course” at Laurel

The 8th at Laurel yesterday: “Sharmin unseated her rider when beginning to duck out leaving the 3/16, veered out sharply colliding with an outrider’s pony, sustained a catastrophic injury and was euthanized on the course.” This happened, mind you, during the race. Horrific. While there’s nothing on the fate of the pony, the Daily Racing Form led its coverage with, “Jockey Jose Vargas sustained a cut lip….” Poor Sharmin was five. In addition to Vargas, her final exploiters include Larry Rabold and Hugh McMahon.

  1. When you abuse horses for gains of money, and tragic accidents occur, it goes back to you until you understand what you have done. Change profession.

  2. The jockey sustained a cut lip….?
The fact that THIS is even a blip on their radar after a sentient being who was made to run literally BLIND on one side because they couldn’t be half-assed bothered to properly TRAIN her was horrifically destroyed just demonstrates how morally and ethically bankrupt these parasites are.

  3. If the average number of living beings killed every day in this industry were jockeys instead of horses (five or six killed daily), would the government still allow this industry to regulate itself?

  4. They had raced Sharmin in a right-sided extended cup blinker, which blocks all peripheral vision to her right side. From what little video I saw that wasn’t heavily edited- Sharmin veered sharply to her right. I know she had blinkers on, and if they were those above-mentioned extended cup blinkers, she never even saw the pony horse and literally was running in a blinded panic. The collision had to have been loud and horrifying- multiple jockeys stopped riding their horses to look behind them to see what had happened. I can’t imagine the poor pony horse escaped unfazed. Every day horrors at the racetrack.

  5. Sharmin is #3. The video focuses on the front-runners so the incident wasn’t bleeped. There was a picture of the beautiful Chestnut pony where the outrider is stationed before the tragedy.Everyday a horror story plays out.
