Death of a 2-Year-Old: “Multiple open fractures, multiple torn tendons and ligaments, rupture of joint capsule, extensive hemorrhage.”

Through a FOIA request to the California Horse Racing Board, I have obtained the following details on some of that state’s kills in 2025 (previous ones here).

She’s Quality, Nov 1, Del Mar R (euth Nov 2)
“Broke down during Breeders’ Cup race: [multiple] complete vertebral fractures; complete tear of intervertebral disc; complete, displaced fracture of right wing of sacrum; complete, displaced, comminuted fracture of left wing of sacrum; complete, displaced, comminuted ilium fracture; severe hemorrhage.” They also noted “shock” and “marked abdominal pain,” and yet this poor girl, just four, wasn’t euthanized till the following day – no doubt because they were still hoping for a breeding “career.” Abhorrent.

The destruction…

Whole Shebang, Nov 17, Santa Anita T
“Multiple open fractures, multiple torn tendons and ligaments, rupture of joint capsule, extensive hemorrhage.” Also, “osteochondral disease” – Whole was two years old.
