In the final race of the day yesterday at Parx, Bucks Some, said the chart, “was injured and transported off the track via ambulance.” In my long experience doing this, that combination – “injured, ambulance” – almost always translates to dead. And indeed this pitiful girl is. I use that adjective here – I know, they’re all pitiful – because, you see, Bucks was 10 years old and this was her 87th turn under the whip.
As you can probably guess, with a “career” that long (all but 2 of the 87 in PA, by the way) Bucks had plenty of exploiters. But the last, Daniel Velazquez, merits special venom. Velazquez, Bucks’ master for her final 15 races, seemed hellbent on squeezing every last dime out of her surely battered body. And Parx, being a taxpayer-subsidized track that pays first-last, makes it ever so easy and enticing to do so. For example, this past Feb 3, Bucks finished last of 12 at Parx, but Velazquez still walked away with $400.
One final note. In its (typical) dense, delusional – not to metion morally bankrupt – coverage, the Paulick Report wrote of how this was to be Bucks’ final race, with her breeder having made arrangements for a “retirement” at his farm. Dr. Mike Chovanes: “I just can’t take it when they say ‘one more race’ for a horse like Bucks Some. We had a blanket made for her, and invited all her former trainers up for a drink to celebrate. And then this happened.”
You, sir, are every bit as culpable as the scumbag Velazquez. You made her for the express purpose of selling her for profit – and by selling her into horseracing you immediately put her in harm’s way.
One final, final note: The fatal “spill” – as the equally dense, delusional, morally-bankrupt track announcer called it – was scrubbed from the Parx replay. Cowards.
We have seen this so many times play out here in Oregon. Look up Lethal Grande.He was a horse who earned more $$ than we were at the time of his racing. He literally was run until he broke down & died! All these crummy subsidies MUST be stopped & eliminated. LG also was passed through many trainers & owners. We saw him break down. We also were at the sale in Salem Or. when he was sold. Since he was a gelding no one thought of retiring him ever from what we are aware of.

You know, when the “big earners” like Mid Day Image and Bucks Some are catastrophically injured racing then put to death, fans go ballistic (another topic for another day) and it’s all over social media…
Then racing mouthpieces like Paulick can’t help but to address it and in their desperate defense of racing, immediately try to minimize culpability by reporting some earlier connections’ exclamations of love for the horse they used then dumped, ie, “We had a home waiting for this horse!”…with crocodile tears included, of course.
So simply put, as I have many times on X regarding the industry’s responsibility in the exploitation & deaths of Mid Day Image and Bucks Some, this;
Bandoroff could have claimed Mid Day Image for a lousy $4500 mere weeks before he was raced to his grave; he didn’t which reveals how little he cared.
Chovanes had opportunities to claim Bucks Some for 5K (only 4K on 7-4-25) PLENTY of times; I quit counting at 10. He stood by as she was raced to death.
I can’t help but wonder if the breeder, Dr. Mike Chovanes, just opportunisticly made up that b******* story about what he said he did to prepare to have a “celebration” or not?!
Does anyone honestly believe that he gave one damn about the deliberately abused and exploited mare named BUCKS SOME??? Even Ray Paulick should know better than that.
All they care about is getting a paycheck one way or another out of the cruelty of exploiting horses as gambling chips.
These heartless heathens can still get drunk and be repulsive, horse abusing thugs. They can laugh about the fact that they are not going to be arrested, charged, tried, or convicted and put in jail for criminal Animal Cruelty.
How magnanimous of you to invite all the previous exploiters of Bucks Some to celebrate the fact that she managed to survive almost a decade of 23-hour confinement and forced racing by multiple industry parasites in spite of the doubtless painful deterioration of her body. And you even had a blanket made for her? Well, if that doesn’t absolve you of contributing to this mare’s years of mental and physical torment, I don’t know what would.
