The NYS Gaming Commission reports that Capo Di Tutti broke down while training yesterday at Belmont and is dead. The 2-year-old becomes the 73rd (disclosed) victim at NY tracks this year. “Equine welfare,” “safer racing” are mirages, folks. Speaking of which, our ally in Australia, the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR), reports that 8/1/24-7/31/25 is the deadliest year in Australian racing on record. The deadliest. (Here, also, is a Guardian piece on CPR’s work.)

RIP, Capo Di Tutti.
“Only a week ago the Herald Sun reported that Racing Victoria’s most senior veterinary officer is embroiled in legal action against the governing body, alleging she was being pressured and coerced into allowing horses with a ‘high risk of catastrophic injury’ to race.” It’s shocking but sadly not surprising. The pressure to prioritize profits and performance over animal welfare has been a problem in the racing industry for years.
“Disclosed” is right.
I saw Uncle George get injured on the 19th and he’s still not even listed on the database. Crickets.
Wanda, that`s the truth! Deception on all levels. Not only to bet on the horses but also to ride them for the owners / trainers at times for no pay in am & also to care for these well off owners / trainers horses at farms too. Deception all around.
Most people who follow racing at all should know by now that forcing underdeveloped colts and fillies to live completely unnatural lives is not in the best interest of the horse and that this industry deceives people to get them to place bets.
