The following horses were injured in U.S. races last week and had to be removed from the track by “equine ambulance.” While fates remain unknown at this time, we will eventually get death confirmations on many, if not most, through our FOIA reporting. Note, also, that “bled” is shorthand for pulmonary hemorrhage – bleeding in the lungs.

Iron Moon at Louisiana
General Maximus at Colonial
Scott Alaia at Penn
Sa’ad at Saratoga
Dolomite at Saratoga (also “bled”)
Father Mark at Evangeline
Flaca No Mas at Retama (also “fell after wire”)
Fasta Lavista Baby at Ellis
Lucky Girl Coco at Gulfstream
Speak Softly at Saratoga
Tanganyika at Belterra
Veracruz at Del Mar
Spanish Delight at Delaware (also “fell”; replay scrubbed)
Fabulous Dasha Fire at Prairie (also “fell”)
Williams Empire at Prairie
Neat at Saratoga
Me and Molly McGee at Saratoga
Brereton’s Baytown at Mountaineer (chart said, “severely injured”)
Adios Cool Arrows at Wyoming

And then there were these, not reported as ambulanced off, but…

Corruption “pulled up in heat distress” at Saratoga
Dillinger “attended to on track with heat distress” at Saratoga
Dancin for Gold “bled” at Ellis

  1. FABULOUS DASHA FIRE is a Quarter Horse gelding meaning he is a he, not an it.

  2. I honestly thought Fabulous Dasha Fire was put down on the track after its nasty spill at Prairie Meadows but they’ve been quite mum over it as if nothing happened. But perhaps it too is going for surgery and if so, fingers crossed it will pull through.

  3. Marie, we once had mare who had broken sesamoid non-displaced fortunately for her racing here at Oregon`s notoriously sharp curved 1/2 mile bullring tracks. She was at stall rest when we picked her up out of a stable in the NW hills of Hillsboro, Or. We allowed her to walk & freely move around our 16 1/2 acre pasture. She did not run for quite some time. Like a couple of years. Later she began to gallop a little at times in the field. We then had a very good vet, Victor Alexander X-ray her left leg from the carpal joint down. Victor found no sign of a fracture on her any longer! She was a Seattle Slew line mare who lived until the age of 26 peacefully in a herd environment here at our farm. We acquired her for cheap as she was at times onery & would chase our cats & grab them by their tails! She did the same with coyotes & dogs too. We have no doubt that she being a very tall & rangy mare was not fed enough & was full of ulcers. The founder of this farm had 2 types of ulcers herself so she knew how to heal them.

  4. And to add to that- Brereton had to be dragged and beaten to get into the starting gate. They had the front of the starting gate open to make it a little more enticing. So much for horses “loving and being bred to run”. Shouldn’t he have been excitedly running into the gate if he wasn’t sore and injured already??

  5. The folks at Baytown strike again. Brereton Baytown broke down in the WV derby last night- per HRN- he has a broken sesamoid and will go for surgery today. IF he survives, he will be but another crippled young horse with a long life ahead of him, and will be most likely looking for a home to take care of him for that potentially long life.
