The 1st at Parx yesterday, in the cold, terse words of the chartwriter: “Voy Y Vengo suffered a catastrophic injury early, lost rider and was subsequently euthanized.” Voy was four years old, and this was his 17th time under the whip. His loving “connections” – Lawson Racing, Alexis Romero – also had him “For Sale” the day he died.
At Gulfstream Sunday, said the chart, Term “fell entering the backstretch and left the track via ambulance.” Usually, a deadly combination, and indeed it was. The racing press is reporting that Term “suffered a fatal heart attack.” He was four years old, still in adolescence – “heart attack.” Of note, the only reason we know about this death is because the jockey, Junior Alvarado, was dinged up, and Alvarado, you see, is a famous jockey who also rides a Derby-level horse. So of course it’s being reported, and if they’re going to report his injury, they’re almost obliged to report the dead horse too. Vile.
That is to say the Washington Horse Racing Commission will be in the red by March of 2027. Emerald Downs might shutdown in 2026.
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority is charging fees that will cause the racetrack to run out of operating funds and possibly shutdown. Way to go, HISA!
Emerald Downs is reported to be galloping towards a financial disaster according to the article by Scott Hanson in The Seattle Times. By March of 2027, they will be in the red.
