Through a FOIA request to the Idaho Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills there in 2024. (Note: Idaho’s last remaining commercial track closed in 2016. What’s left are various fairs, which combined for just 22 days of racing last year.)
Depth Charge, May 11, Pocatello R
“Fractured shoulder, put down by state vet.” Depth Charge was two years old, and this was his very first race.
Diamond Lustre, May 25, Pocatello R
“Was struggling turning for home, rider tried to pull up but horse collapsed on track [and died] – possible aneurysm.” Diamond was seven years old.
Race #5 at Pocatello Downs, 300 Yards, Dirt, Trials/ Open, 2 Year Olds
Purse: $2,000 // DEPTH CHARGE finished Third; suffered injuries and was euthanized.
This is unacceptable abuse of horses.
This is not wholesome entertainment.
This is Animal Cruelty.
This barbaric cruelty to horses does not build character anymore than the rodeos that use and abuse horses especially for bronc riding. Racing and rodeos are disgusting animal abuse.
