Death at Del Mar; Fall at Parx

The CHRB reports that 2-year-old Timty perished at Del Mar Wednesday. While the Board (of course) offered no details, I can tell you the death came three days after a timed workout at that same track. Chief among the complicit, trainer Doug O’Neill.

Same day at Parx, 5-year-old Carnivore “was injured and fell, and subsequently vanned off.” While the shot of the fall (death?) is brief, I relay it as yet another example of this vile industry’s cold indifference. It took this track announcer a full 15 seconds to acknowledge the fall, and even then, calling it but a spill…

  1. Lisa, Parx wanted the jockeys to sign a waiver in 2014; (BloodHorse). I don’t know about the racehorse owners signing anything that resembles a release of liability to the racetrack or any staff employed by the racetrack ownership and management.
    Some of the trainers are also the owners. I don’t believe they can legally hold the racetrack responsible when they know they are sending their horses out to die or be fatally injured on the racetrack on purpose. It’s a given that a certain percentage of the horses exploited for racing are going to die a sudden death or be injured fatally in some way and euthanized on a daily/weekly basis. Killing horses is part of their so-called game/sport and they know it!
    I think the racetrack ownership and management would NEVER take responsibility for injuries to horses in the form of lawsuits filed against them by the racehorse owners or owner/trainers.
    If anyone has a more informed answer, I’m all ears.
    At Woodbine, I think they were more concerned about what the public would think about them killing three or possibly five horses in one day on their synthetic surface than anything resembling liability to the racehorse owners.

  2. Does a horse owner sign something that holds trainers, vets and other staff not responsible for the death or mutilation of their “investment”?

  3. Nothing sadder than seeing a horse fall & that you know will not survive such a catastrophic injury. We have seen many at our now defunct & redeveloped Portland Meadows track. RIP beautiful horse.

  4. He “went down at the back of the pack.” Then the video cuts off. Just another day at the races; a horse is injured for human vanity and entertainment.
    It’s all very creepy that they can be so casual about it.
