Killed at Canterbury: 6-Year-Old, 2-Year-Old

Minnesota remains the only state in the country that refuses to identify its dead horses, claiming that “contents of [veterinary] medical records must be kept private and not released to third parties unless authorized by the client or required by law.” (Although, I should point out, Florida and Arkansas refuse my FOIAs entirely, so I guess I should be grateful for whatever we get in Minnesota.) This said, I have been able to confirm the following deaths (through other sources) at Canterbury this year:

Ghost of Genevieve, killed in the 9th race Jul 14. Ghost was six; this was her 27th race. Texas Lace, killed in the 7th race Sep 26. Texas was two; this was her very first race.

  1. Ah, Good old Canterbury. Remember when they would have a written announcement at the end of the Portland Meadows fall / winter meet in the race office saying how they would like the horses & trainers/ owners/ grooms to come to their soon to start racing season. Always catering to the bottom of the barrel type class IV tracks. Anybody notice the irony of their name? Canter Bury. So glad to see our 1 mile commercial track redeveloped to an Amazon warehouse / distribution center now.

  2. As far as I know, there has never been a challenge to the “privacy” excuse. By challenge I mean having an attorney review the issue and even going to court to get a resolution.
    Of course it would be an expensive proposition. However, until this matter is resolved legally, protecting “privacy”will be the go to excuse cited for non disclosure by this nefarious business.

  4. How is it legal to withhold information requested through a Freedom of Information Act request? Isn’t it “required by law” to be compliant with this FOIA law?
    The people who exploit horses for racing and wagering and write their losses of their horse business off on their taxes should be subject to the law of disclosure of the corrupt things they do in their deplorable excuse for a business.
