The 8th at Parx yesterday: “Savage Dragon suffered catastrophic injury nearing 8th pole and was subsequently euthanized.” That “catastrophic injury” also involved a “spill,” according to the track announcer, though that was of course excised from the replay. (The announcer did her best to sound sad as she called the finish.) Savage was three.
Quick question for all you horseracing-is-a-sport apologists out there (as I know you read this site): How many baseball (basketball, football, hockey) players died last night, this year, this century? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

The fine folks at Parx never seem to quite catch on to the whole Horse Death Reporting thing, do they?
1. “We killed Savage Dragon immediately.”
2. “Oops, changed our minds. He fell, so we merely vanned him off from our (super-safe) track.”
3. “Sorry, scratch that. We did kill him, but now we’re clarifying the timing of events by adding the all-important qualifier: “subsequently.” This should help clear things up, as we here at Parx are fully compliant with all of HISA’s (super-safe) “Safety” standards, and we want Lisa & Co. to know we did not kill him until AFTER he suffered his horror-show public breakdown.”
It’s difficult to comprehend that any individual who goes to college for eight years to become a veterinarian would be willing to accept the unnecessary abuse and subsequent killing of horses as an “acceptable” form of practice.
