Leaving Whip Marks on the Athletes – The Lie of Horseracing as Sport, Again

A couple of recent harness rulings…

Ocean Downs, Aug 11: “Justin Vincent is suspended from driving for three days for causing visible whip marks while driving Oodles of Gold.”

Scioto Downs, Aug 21: “While driving Charleyinthebox during the last half of race 3, Mickey Holliday did hit the horse excessively, and during the stretch he hit the horse while out of contention. Mr. Holliday is fined $500, or $300 if not appealed.”

Justice, horseracing style.

  1. Criminal charges and disbarment needed….if horseracing continues the ghoulish practices will continue..offender’s pictures need to be made public.

  2. The “means to line their pockets”is a huge part of the problem, Rebecca. They also see them as means to feed their egos in many cases. These people do not view the horses as a sentient beings, with individual personalities that can suffer and suffer they do at the hands of these abusers.
    I don’t understand the mentality of people who assume they have the right to inflict such suffering on a living creature

  3. There is a push to ban equestrian events from the Olympics because of the trainers and the riders abusing horses. The videos clips of the humans whipping their horses excessively really helps to educate the public of how bad the abuse is.

As disgusting as this is, I’ve seen regular horse owners viciously saw on their horse’s mouth with the bit, smack them repeatedly and aggressively with whips, and flail away in their sides with spurs, and no one says anything – except for me: I’ve been kicked out of multiple barns and actually asked to leave local fairs because I’m so vocal. It’s like because horses are large animals, it’s somehow acceptable to treat them harshly. If regular horse owners find it normal and even somehow necessary to treat their horses this way, how can we expect anything different from the people on the track, who claim no emotional attachment to their horses and instead see them as nothing more than a means to line their wallets?

  5. These penalties for abuse of horses are a sad, sick joke. These animal abusers wouldn’t be laughing all the way to the bank if they had to be tied to a post and whipped until numerous welts appeared on their own flesh.
