The 9th at Charles Town last night, in the words of the chartwriter: “Wants N Needs gave chase leaving the turn but was pulled up with a fatal injury past the 3/8 pole and had to be euthanized on the track.” Just another dead athlete. Wants was three years old, and this was his fourth time under the whip.
Also: The NYS Gaming Commission reports this for Overnight Shipper at Tioga Wednesday: “After examination by veterinarian, horse was euthanized.” That examination apparently came late, for you see Overnight was a DNF at that track four days prior. He was, get this, 11 years old. That poor, poor boy.
When someone says “sand” I always think of very small particles like the ones that you see at a beach. Back in 1997, I rented a stall at a boarding stable with an open door to an outdoor individual pen for a short time for a Shetland pony. It wasn’t too bad but there was a low place in the ground in the indoor part where water collected when it rained or whatever. The owners of the outfit said they were going to get “sand” for the stalls. I was thinking sand as in beach sand. It turned out to be rocks the size of peas or slightly larger. I couldn’t freaking believe it.
In Quarter Horse racing there was a trainer who used an electric cattle prod to “train” horses to jump out of the starting gate fast. I believe the horse referred to in the article was the champion QH named DASH FOR CASH, if I am not mistaken.
It’s unbelievable at how much abuse is dished out to the horses by these people who call themselves “horsemen” but abusive treatment of horses is abuse; it is not horsemanship at all.
In our non-Hisa state that is only to common for old class horses to run into the ground & disappear. Of course the local HBPA is fighting tooth & nail to continue with no HISA reg.s or rules on our 1/2 mile bull ring tracks that are left. I wish all these horrible 1/2 mile bull ring tracks in Oregon & other states would just disappear!
A 7-year-old Maryland-bred Gelding named DOUBLE CROWN owned by Built Wright Stables is on the Vet’s List in Maryland but will be raced at Charles Town in West Virginia, a NON-HISA state. Norman Cash is the trainer.
Knowing what high standards West Virginia has, as in “above the law” high, and the reputation of Built Wright Stables and Norman Cash, I expect this gelding could be run to his death in West Virginia at some point in the not-too-distant future.
There’s no chance of him having “a second career” as a pasture pet with these people.
We have seen very smart horses just refuse to leave the gates after they opened. We told the horse people at the time that was a smart horse not to run on our hard sand based track! No running & no becoming sore. Of course they just all laughed & said his next trip would not be good. So glad to see our old Portland Meadows gone.
Catalytic also flipped in the gate and apparently was stuck under it, in the same race. Wonder if he is injured and was trying to tell his connections he wasn’t up for racing and told them the only dramatic way he knew how to.
