The 3rd race at Thistledown yesterday, in the cold, terse telling of the chartwriter: “Chargina chased the early pace inside, shifted out to the four path near the half-mile marker, suffered a catastrophic injury, fell and was euthanized.” Chargina was six years old, and this was her 44th time under the whip. The complicit: breeder Thomas Teal, owner/trainer Nestor Rivera, jockey Ferrin Peterson – who broke her collarbone, which is the only reason Chargina’s death garnered any racing-press coverage – and all those who support the U.S. horseracing industry in any way.

That sounds unbelievablely deplorable.
Sad part is, this girl is also a veterinarian, but she couldn’t feel the horse was pretty lame in the post parade. This poor mare got failed by multiple people. The connections were enjoying a win in the winners circle a few races later, with Chargina most likely gone from their minds.
I expect the jockey to recover and ride again. I would be very surprised if the jockey had a change of heart over the fact that this form of extreme exploitation of horses caused the horse she was riding (and whipping?!) to die.
I remember reading an article about a jockey who had broken ribs and I don’t remember what else but she was not healed up yet and was willing to ride again. The trainer called her “a real trooper” which shows the mentality that they don’t care if horses are made lame or maimed and killed from the extreme exertion and being whipped to run faster and farther than they ever would without the abusive treatment from greedy people putting money over morals.
