Another Welted Horse in Indiana

From the Indiana Racing Commission:

“While driving No. 1 Grand Revival in race 8 at Hoosier Park on June 22, Marvin Luna was found to have welted the horse. For this violation, Mr. Luna is fined $500. It was made clear to Mr. Luna that any further violations of this type during the 2024 race meet would result in a suspension from driving.”

Repulsive, of course, but simply business as usual.

At Delaware Park Sunday, say the stewards, Commission Always was scratched by the regulatory vet for being “lame in the post parade.” Now, it’s possible the 4-year-old was injured then and there, but far more likely he was brought to race that day already lame. His “connections” as of Jun 26: owner David Neilson, trainer Angel Sanchez-Pinero.

  1. And I think we should throw the owners and trainers into the race as well….

  2. How about we have those jockeys race distances of 5 furlongs to a mile in 96f to 103f temps like the horses have been forced to here in Oregon & the rest of the west coast. Give them weights for age to carry & distances too. Let`s see how long they would last.

  3. How long would this suspension be for Marvin Luna? Would it be one day or maybe three days? Or, would the suspension be one week?
Would he be allowed to participate in a race if they “need” a driver to “drive” a horse in a race during his “suspension”?
Will a suspension be on race days? Or, would his suspension be on NON-RACING days during the race meet?
I expect that the day or days of any suspension issued to Marvin Luna would be laughable to Marvin Luna.

This form of Animal Cruelty should be punished with a sentence of jail time. This CRUELTY TO HORSES exploited for money and entertainment has been considered “socially acceptable” for way too long. This perception must change.

  4. We’ve probably all seen those jockey footraces where the jockeys run out of the horses’ gates and bettors laugh and sometimes place bets for charity. Would the jockeys do it if they were saddled with a heavy weight and whipped mercilessly to the point of welting along the way? Would it be funny? Let’s ask.
