This HW-colored op-ed in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix was sent to us by the writer, Margaret Henderson. It is an outstanding piece of activism. Thank you, Margaret, for fighting the fight north of the border.
Then there’s this. Can’t imagine a better refutation of “love their jobs.”

*EXCELLENT* article in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, and I hope that Margaret Henderson keeps writing about this ………… “cruelty in plain sight”!!
Excellent. Thank you, Rebecca.
I’ve said it repeatedly: if a horse was in the pasture with his head in the air and his mouth gaping open, the owner would assume – and correctly so – that the horse had injured his mouth. Yet stick a piece of metal in a horse’s mouth and that same behavior is just because the horse is being “an ass” and trying to avoid the cues from the rider. If we as humans have to have our gums numbed for dental procedures, why do we think metal against a horse’s bare gums doesn’t cause pain?
The overuse of extreme pain devices by people in the racing industry is just more proof that they don’t have a clue on God’s earth how to handle a horse – and nor do they care to learn. Horses aren’t sentient beings with emotions and feelings, they’re objects with which to pack the bank accounts of their “loving connections”.
Always hated galloping a horse in those crummy ring bits! Just to prove a point as to how well taught our farms horses were before riding them at the track, we would ride them on the track bit-less with only a halter & lead. Of course the other horse people complained to the outrider who made us have to use a bit. Yes. The eyes are the window to a horses soul & tell one everything if one is willing to listen!
The picture of the man in the suit with the top hat leading the horse with all of the headgear with attached metal bits in the horse’s mouth causing so much pain to the horse is a picture of sadistic torture of a horse.
Claiming ignorance as an excuse doesn’t make it any less sadistic.
These people in top hats sporting flowers in their lapels are a disgrace to humanity. They are so desensitized to inflicting pain and terror that they just don’t see it.
Just look at the hardware. That is nothing short of torture. And if one has any doubt look at those eyes and then try to claim that this is not an example. of raw cruelty that no civilized society should tolerate.
Thank you Margaret Henderson for fighting the good fight.
