“Catastrophic Pelvis and Sacrum Fractures” – Two Years Old

Through a FOIA request to the California Horse Racing Board, I have obtained the following details on some of that state’s kills last year (more can be found here).

Fly Wicked Eagle, Jun 22, Sacramento S
“Acute respiratory infection, toxic with profuse epistaxis. Died in transport to UC Davis.” Fly Wicked was three years old and had last been raced Jun 2.

Last Inning, Jun 28, Pleasanton S
“Recumbent, non-responsive, became agonal and died: acute, severe cerebellar hemorrhage; cortical hemorrhage; pulmonary hemorrhage; neck hemorrhages; myocardial hemorrhages. Cause not determined.” Last Inning was five years old and had last been raced Apr 28.

Animae, Jul 1, Santa Anita T
“Catastrophic pelvis and sacrum fractures: [One fracture] split the bone into two fragments, resulting in complete separation of the wing from the body; [others] split the proximal fragment into three pieces. S1 vertebra had a complete, displaced fracture of the laminae, resulting in complete separation of the spinous process from the lamina and body of the S1. There were also complete, displaced fractures of the transverse processes and the body.” Animae was two years old and being prepped for her first race.

Vasco, Jul 23, Pleasanton T
“While working, [horse] suffered a catastrophic shoulder injury: complete, comminuted, displaced fracture; rupture; extensive hemorrhage.” Also: “osteochondral disease [both front limbs]; numerous ulcerations throughout the stomach.” Vasco was four years old.

Kind of Gallant, Oct 30, Golden Gate T
“Galloping out after four-furlong workout, [horse] suffered sudden death. Cause undetermined.” Kind of Gallant was six years old.

  1. The causes of deaths to horses exploited for racing and wagering handle is the abuse, brutality and cruelty to these doomed horses by their evil owners, trainers and the whole mob of horse-killers, no matter how incompetent and dishonest they are.
