“Mammal to Mammal”

Today, I give you another poignant poem from the pen of HW activist Ronda Cooperstein. Thank you, Ronda. (If you’d like to share a personal story on our site about your life with horses, please reach out: patrickjbattuello@gmail.com.)

“Mammal to Mammal”

Even though they want to erase you, they cannot.

Your life is not a pencil mark, a footprint in sand.

Your eyes will always find me

Where your slight shadow fell

On stable straw

Backed against the wall

Before they snatched you away.

Your mother

Stomped her hooves

Shook her head

Neighed all through the night

With the knife in her heart.

It’s not easy to imagine how deep the cuts,

Each season when they trucked her little ones away.

Little colts and foals come like us, so innocently

Into the world of pastures, rivers and windy days.

But their ways are not our ways.

They are not ours to take and sell,

and not a gift to give.

They want to graze and run

To love and live.

Prisoners of human supremacist hate,

We promise you, we will change your fate.

Love,

Another Mammal
