“Dear Horse,” a Poem

This morning, I give you another poignant poem from the pen of HW activist Ronda Cooperstein. Thank you, Ronda.

Dear Horse,

It’s holiday time for humans

And, also, another war the taxes are paying for.

The subsidized cruelty you know so well

Man’s industry of death, its merchants and means.

You, once a war horse, had kings on your back

All bloody day, braving their battlefields;

Galloped to death against your will,

Kicked when down, then hacked and burned.

(Dancing, prancing proud war horse…please…)

You closed your innocent eyes when it was over

While they connived another enterprise,

Monetized you through whips and chains.

Against all laws of nature

Nothing has changed.

From warhorse chain to racehorse chain,

From pain to more pain.

How can I sleep when I think of you?

I want to free you from the beasts

Who love Christmas lights and liberty bells

And forever wars that wear us down.

In 2024, I promise you, I’ll do more.

Love,

Me

  1. What more is there to say? So much more needs to be done to help the beautiful horse. Hopefully this can be accomplished soon..

  2. So well said! May 2024 be the year that race tracks close for good. Thank you HW for being unstoppable!

  3. “From warhorse chain to racehorse chain,
    From pain to more pain.
How can I sleep when I think of you?”

What a poignant poem, Ronda!! I genuinely ache, i.e., just thinking about the racehorses’ (day-in-and-day-out) terror, pain, and prolonged suffering. ‘Time for this entire wretched/cruel business to be a thing of the past and simply ………… gone, you know.

  4. This poem totally describes the sad and horrible life of the horses involved in horseracing. This is a New Year and it needs to stop!
