Cruelty, Killing – This Is Saratoga Race Course

A reminder on this, the opening weekend of Saratoga ’23…

Saratoga Race Course proudly bills itself “the oldest sporting venue in the nation” – one of the more blatant manifestations of The Big Lie. What you won’t see in all their slick marketing, however, is the cost – a cost, that is, measured in lives. Follows is a list of the horses killed at Saratoga since 2009. Remember, these are just the ones reported. Not reflected here are those euthanized off-site (for Saratoga-related injuries), nor the hundreds (probably thousands) more who raced at Saratoga and were eventually sent to slaughter once the industry was done with them. In short, this is an incomplete reckoning. (The killing, of course, is but one of the racing evils; the others, here.)

  1. Politicians think it is okay to take money from lobbyists. When the government is “in bed with” the industry insiders and lobbyists, we have unjust atrocities with very negative consequences.

  2. I find it especially vile and disgusting when the industry tries to put a pretty face on racing as it does at places like Saratoga, Keeneland, and Del Mar. It doesn’t matter if it’s Parx or Saratoga – killing is killing. Thank you Patrick and others for reminding people of this by your protests.

    • I saw some of these obits include the barbaric Steeplechase. This week, they will be running the Steeplechase at coveted Saratoga. So the list will.undoubtedly increase in numbers. Having mentioned before, the number of starters at the Steeplechase rarely shows the same number of finishers. It is a barbaric form of abuse running a huge distance jumping the fences with a human on your back in the heat. And getting beaten in the meantime. Please Saratoga..stick to your restaurants, history and Long Island Ice teas for your tourists.

      • Steeplechase/jumps horses make something that’s very difficult look easy if they can last the whole distance of a steeplechase/jumps race. Steeplechase/jumps horses carry weight in the range of 150 pounds on their backs and run a distance of three or four miles all while expected to clear the hurdles. That’s crazy. That’s insane. The times are not as fast paced as flat track racing (22 seconds for a quarter-mile fraction on the flat) but it is still way too demanding for the horses.
Most of the jockeys appear to be obsessed with whipping the horses between jumps. This racing of horses on the flat or over hurdles is abusive, barbaric, cruel and completely unnecessary.

  3. I will not be attending Saratoga this year. Or next year. Or the year after, or, for that matter, AT ALL for the foreseeable future. AS an old racing buddy friend of mine once said to me, “we wait all year for this meet”

Yeah, we do. Or DID. I had front row, finish line seats at my table in the upstairs dining room every year and I thoroughly enjoyed betting the races, along with the whole ‘scene’, particularly at Saratoga – it was the best racing product of the year. Probably still is. And, as most regular posters on this site know, I no longer bet the races, having been made full aware of the abject cruelty that abounds in this industry day after day, year after year, but sadly, is both slyly and very effectively hidden from 90% of the general public thanks to the racing industry’s desperate attempts to shore up their rapidly dying sport.

Yup, for the longest time, I too, thought it was all just another case of “those crazy animal activists” at it again, but videos, stats, facts, and confirmation of the many deaths and abuse just don’t lie.

I realize that most posters on this site are fully aware of this, but it’s my hope that some bettors and horse racing fans who may be reading can be made aware of the dark underbelly that is horse racing. Let’s face it, the town of Saratoga is very pretty folks, with the cool mountain air, the lush upstate New York scenery, the many restaurants and night life in town, and all the accouterments that make for a wonderful vacation, including, the “great” horse racing this time of year.

Great? Well, killing, maiming, abuse and slaughter of sentient beings just ‘ain’t my idea of fun’, kids, and if one pores through this site pretty carefully and [if you like], double checks the facts that Mr. Battuello posts here, you might, like me, get soured on this sport, and pretty quickly, too.

The racing industry’s defense when hit with these atrocities is pretty weak, and while some casual fans may just be in denial, not wanting to accept the inevitable killing, the industry knows it’ll never change. But the end of horse racing means, to them, the end of their $$$ money train.

I firmly believe it’s gotten worse than ever, and the higher-ups know this. But they’ll do their level best to wring that last dollar out of it while they still can. No, I never thought it was this bad. But face reality folks, it IS – and hiding your head in the sand won’t make it go away.

To racing bettors, I say: switch your gambling instincts to safer forms of betting, ones where no sentient being gets killed on regular basis. There have never been more opportunities for gambling as there is today, such as video lotteries, sports betting, online casinos, land based casinos, slots, card games table games – and tons more to slake your betting thirst..

Why keep killing these poor horses?
    -Joe

  4. Thank you.
While I no longer bet on horse racing, I wouldn’t take any bet, at ANY odds, on seeing this industry thriving, let alone surviving too many more years.
    -Joe

  5. Joe, I agree with your assessment. In the meantime though, several thousand young Thoroughbreds will be produced, abused, brutalized, doped, overexerted overworked, injured and killed by the racing industry people. The same will be true of the other racing breeds of horses.
