Rider “acted out of frustration when his two-year-old trainee was acting unruly.”

In addition to five horses vet-scratched at Gulfstream yesterday, there were these:

Grace Candy “hit the starting gate”
Tickle My Fancy “hit the starting gate”
Lord Jaxston “hit the starting gate” (finished 33 lengths back)
Chloe’s Toy “hit the starting gate”
Camilla “slammed [one horse] into [another]”
Tovia “was slammed between foes and taken up at the start”

Then, the chart note for 5-year-old Lemon Roses at Sam Houston yesterday: “was hard to load…was used up then stopped…was vanned off after the race.”

And finally, this from the stewards at Santa Anita, Jan 26:

“Trainer Rolando Quinonez met with the stewards pertaining to allegations that he misused a shank and riding crop on a horse under his care. A surveillance video exhibited Mr. Quinonez over-used his riding crop while on his trainee in the shed row. Mr. Quinonez stated he acted out of frustration when his two-year-old trainee was acting unruly.” Ruling: $1,000 fine, “evaluated for anger management.”

This is horseracing.

  1. So much of what people refer to as “horse training” is not training at all. It’s abuse. It is NOT HORSEMANSHIP when someone loses their patience and loses their temper and just tries to beat the horse and intimidate the horse into submission. When a person loses his or her patience and acts out violently and hits the horse repeatedly, it is not training. It’s ABUSE! I have seen videos shared on Facebook of so-called trainers doing things to horses that is NOT HORSEMANSHIP OR TRAINING. IT’S OUTRIGHT CRUELTY AND ABUSE! Also, I have seen horses being abused in person but that’s been several years ago now.

  2. A $1,000 fine and “evaluated for anger management”. What a joke! Who evaluated him and what was the decision?!
These people act as judge and jury which, at best, is a clear conflict of interest.
Further, they conduct their internal investigations even in potentially nefarious situations which is so wrong. Regardless of the conflict of interest issue, they are not capable or qualified to conduct such investigations.
This inherent corruption and outrageous cruelty is supported by our corrupt governments.
P.S. Further, any money from these fines should be donated to the inadequately funded aftercare programs and sanctuaries such as Old Friends…
