While not all the “vanned” end up dead, most do, as borne out by our year-end FOIA reports. But even if death is not the ultimate result, the above are victims nonetheless, suffering painful injuries – in the case of the bleeders, pulmonary hemorrhage – so that some men may gamble, others chase pots of gold. (For any new confirmed deaths during the week, please see our running annual list.)

  1. this big cover – is this a new thing to hide a dead horse – never saw before

    • This big cover or screen is nothing new. The racing industry has been hiding injured horses lying and dying on the racetracks in the past for several years now. This exact same picture has been shown on a previous blog post.

  2. Are these monsters afraid of losing punters? This must be the only reason the greedy money grabbers are hidden under the covers.

  3. Racehorses should never be forced to run in this extreme heat or ever, but the heat exacerbates all of the incredible stress forced on their respiratory systems.
Outright animal cruelty and abuse unabated while dogs only went out for pottie yesterday.
Throw a saddle on the trainer’s backs and all those gamblers then shove a bit in their mouth and whip them onto the track.
    See if they like it.
It’s incredulous that millions in NY public subsidies are paying for this every year.

  4. Last night at Mountaineer race 8 race,Coosa Bay DNF. The replay is not showing detail(ofcourse)but he was running last most of the race. This horse is owned and trained by Burton K. Sipp. So do we venture to guess that it’s possible this is another lost horse from the barn in a short period of time. Little Christy in a horrible spill not too long ago owned and trained by the same.

    • I don’t know if the horse is dead, but if not, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up dumped at a killer auction. That’s how Sipp works.

  5. Racing is a haven for the morally depraved.
Everyone knows who the Burton Sipps of this business are but nothing is done about them. Everyone in this business is complicit in the cruelty perpetrated on these horses.

The “officials” will say there is nothing they can do about overworking a horse, for instance , because the decision is left to the trainer/owner! The real decision is racing chooses not to make any rules to inhibit the abuse!!
