While not all the “vanned” end up dead, most do, as borne out by our year-end FOIA reports. But even if death is not the ultimate result, the above are victims nonetheless, suffering painful injuries – in the case of the bleeders, pulmonary hemorrhage – so that some men may gamble, others chase pots of gold. (For any new confirmed deaths during the week, please see our running annual list.)

  1. The first 3 horses listed above at Saratoga were all in the same race together of 7. This was the barbaric Steeplechase that Saratoga prides itself on every summer. Three out of 7 ended up in dire straight. Congratulations…

  2. Yet another mangling and/or death list.
Then there are the racehorses who have more than earned a safe landing – a forever grassy home, BUT NOT IN HORSE RACING!
This morally bankrupt gambling racket and killing business has no depth to its evil when it comes to exploiting racehorses.
Claiming parasite Linda Rice (whose supposed to be suspended on serious charges involving a form of corruption) got her next victim.
    BATTLE STATION. 7/24/2022 at Saratoga.
This 7 y.o gelding raced at the upper levels of horse racing for Ken & Sarah Ramsey then was bought and sold like chattel.
This gelding has made over $689,375 and that’s STILL NOT ENOUGH for these abusers to take care of him.
He’s now up for another round of abuse and probably much more and although he’s at the upper tier of claiming it’s only a matter of time before he goes down the slippery slope getting repeatedly claimed until he dies.
You apologists are lower than a amoeba in the piles of manure where this business belongs.
This is going on in New York because the elected officials have been rubber stamping hundreds of millions of public subsidies every single year and this money is going to the CEO’s to buy up racehorses and hire their parasite trainers to run them into the ground most likely.
Their books need to be neutrally scrutinized and so does their entire business practices and I’m glad that a coalition including HRW & PETA is going to see to it that this gets done.

  3. We have always detested the “Claiming game” This industry is just a “crooked , crummy, gamboling game”. Unfortunately for the performance horses in our area, with the demise of our 1 mile commercial track, the old track vets are now plying their wares at the many 1/4 horse performance barns! All horses used in any kind of athletic competition are at risk of excess med abuses with these,( in our opinion) evil track vets still practicing.

  4. That picture is beyond mortifying. What is that, an old cargo trailer with doors falling off their hinges? Why did West Virginia racing folks decide to stencil “Equine Ambulance” on it, then pull it with a freaking tractor?
(Guess they thought it looked classier than “Corpse Hauler.”)

    • Kelly, I can only imagine how that “door” might have gotten kicked off the lower hinges like that. It’s so sickening to think about all the injured, dying and dead horses they hauled off on that van, or ambulance or whatever you want to call it.
Evidently, they are proud of the name and logo of “Mountaineer” painted on the side of it. It could say “Mountaineer Meat Wagon” but that would be too obvious; as if it isn’t obvious enough as it is that horseracing injures and kills horses every day.
