The Carnage (Almost 200 Dead Horses) at Saratoga Race Course

Look, I get it, the weather is gorgeous and we’re human beings, so naturally we look for outdoor things to do. In NYS, for so many, for so long, the centerpiece of summer fun has been world-renowned Saratoga Race Course – “the oldest,” so they say, “sporting venue in the nation.” What better way, the thinking goes, to spend a lazy August afternoon than to watch those beautiful, majestic animals doing what they love – run. Well, today, racing fans of NY and beyond, I present an inconvenient truth.

If you attend Saratoga this summer, if you bet on Saratoga races from afar, or even if you just watch the racing on tv, your support will make possible the abuse, maiming, and killing of those aforementioned beautiful animals. Indeed, it’s the only thing that can. Follows is a list of the horses killed on those hallowed grounds since 2009 (the first year of state disclosure). Remember, as always, that these are just the ones who were reported. Not reflected here are those euthanized off-site, nor the hundreds (probably thousands) more who raced at Saratoga and eventually were bled-out and butchered – slaughtered, that is – once the industry was done with them.

Saratoga’s 198 dead horses, 7/1/09-7/3/22 (an average of over 15 per summer):

  1. Horses prefer grazing on a large pasture! Horses don’t love being forced into being confined to stalls for 23 hours a day.
Horses don’t love to be whipped to run anywhere.
It’s the humans committing these atrocities against horses that love to watch horses run.

  2. This is horse killing on an industrial scale. The public needs to come around to our side and end this forever. The only thing that will end this is an educated public.

    • I’m embarrassed to admit that I was once one of those millions seduced by the beauty and history of Saratoga. Then I saw M B and Tee (on your list) collapse after crossing the finish line, having WON the race. I was horrified. Worse, there was not a moment’s pause in the “action.” No moment of silence. No mention of the horse’s name. No expression of sadness or regret. Just set up a screen and whisk the horse away while the announcer was on to talking about the next race, hoping to distract the crowd. I left the track immediately, never to return or to support racing in any way. I still think of all the people who bet on that poor little horse, lining up to gleefully take the cash they’d won while the horse lie dead somewhere—-a chilling image and one that sums up the reality of horse racing.

      • Thank you, Teresa – unlike the countless others who are aware of the horse killing in this unnecessary industry (and for what? – frivolous betting entertainment!), YOU have a heart and made a selfless choice to support the horses and not the industry that cripples and kills them.

  3. Here’s an idea …horse killing industry .. how about YOU .. who forcibly created all these unwanted lives .. take care of all the lives you’ve already dumped on us,rather than creating more unwanted lives. Take care of the innocent lives that are ALREADY here. Horse industry is EXACTLY like what so many people over the decades have complained about …irresponsible low economic men who keep pro creating more babies .. and don’t pay child support for the babies they all ready have. THINK about it … it’s the EXACT same thing.

    • For over 30 years, the numbers of Thoroughbred foal crops have declined almost every year. IF THIS RATE OF DECLINE from, say 1990, continues at basically the same rate, in the year 2052, there will be ZERO new baby Thoroughbreds produced by the racing industry in the United States. This rate of decline of the past 30+ years has occurred both with and without government subsidies and government-directed benefits to horseracing in the United States.

  4. Yet another horrific Kill List that should be mandatory to post at every betting window just like the “WARNING” sign on cigatette packages.
So today I watched the ongoing abuse of CHRIS AND DAVE and it was heartbreaking.
Just for the record, I didn’t pay to watch and although I don’t want to watch at all I had to.
This 12 y.o. gelding has been claimed so many times that it would take an entire page to list.
Some of the usual NY claiming parasites like Linda Rice and now Jeffrey Englehart took a stab at him.
This stakes winning gelding in his younger years has seen better days as he’s now a former shadow of himself.
I believe he would be 60 years old in human age – he’s a senior and he’s earned over $848,361
Almost 1 million dollars is STILL NOT ENOUGH to show even one iota of respect for him as a living being.
Instead, today his entire face was controlled with blinkers, it appeared to be a ring bit which is super harsh plus a strap coming down from the blinkers holding his mouth shut to force him to accept the bit.
He was not a happy camper in the post parade and the look in his eyes was FEAR – UTTER FEAR as he was getting closer to the gate.
He waved his head back and forth trying to get even the least bit of freedom movement in his head, but that would not come.
As I watched him today he went through the motions and raced up for about 300 ft. and then was done.
He started going backwards and barely made it through the race finishing last by 20+ lengths.
Now you apologists – is this a racehorse that loves to race you f**cking morons?
I predict he will be dropped down probably to $10,000 or shipped out for more abuse to tracks in PA (another subsidized horse racing state), running for his life in the bottoms $5000 because as long as there’s one drop of juice left to squeeze well you will all squeeze it out of him until he drops dead or gets claimed again.
This horse has given his all to every single claiming parasite, to every owner and trainer, to the tracks, to the wagering companies to everybody and what does he get in return?
Cruelty, abuse and your stupid heartless lying lines.
I hope I live to see the day that these subsidies end in NY and that horse racing ends.
I think that its demise is inevitable because they are well on the way there.

    • Gina, is there a way to follow Chris and Dave and somehow rescue him? I have room to home two more horses, and I would pay to rescue him. This makes me so unbelievably sad. 12 years old and he still hasn’t been wrung dry by the parasites who own him? I love your idea of posting the kills like a warning on cigarette packs. We’ll never see it, but what a wonderful idea!!

      • Unless the connections are willing to sell him to someone outright, you have to be a licensed trainer and claim him before they kill him. Who knows when that will be? He could be sent out to die in his next race. It’s a game of Russian Roulette. The asshole humans pull the trigger and the horse is killed, more or less.

      • He looked a lot better than most. Others Need help way more. There’s ones that are …. teresa, you don’t EVEN want to know. You don’t want to know. And, saratoga is NOT beautiful teresa.overrated place of old people (saratoga).

        • It’s absolutely distressing that so many horses need to be rescued from abuse, neglect and the slaughter pipeline and that they all cannot be rescued!!!!

    • Gina, you probably saw Chris and Dave was claimed again yesterday – Rob Atras for Robert Derr. Bastards, ALL…sucking every ounce of life from this gelding.

      • Rob Atras – who’s wife claimed a very lame Maracuja, vanned off after her last race, is perfectly fine but that she was going to get further testing. All we hear is cricket chirping since.

        • I’ve seen nothing on Maracuja since that claim by Atras’ wife, Marie. Peculiar, isn’t it?

      • Thanks for the update Joy.
So heartbreaking and yesterday was the 80th time under the whip after making over $848,361 in earnings and that doesn’t include the hundreds of thousands he’s generated at the wagering windows.
Now he’s up for another round of abuse, for another complete change in stable habits which is so stressful on any horse let alone a senior 12 y.o. and to run him in this heat?
Racehorses like CHRIS AND DAVE clearly expose and industry that doesn’t give a damn about their horses despite their stupid lying lines “love them like family,” – gag me with a spoon!

  5. It is time to end the racing of horses and let them retire on sanctuaries or ranches where they can live in peace, be taken care of properly, and enjoy life..

    • Race 1 and 10. Had another horse race 8 but he’s a scratch. So multi opportunities today.

      • Maybe instead of so I should put “given”. Only horseracing provides the given constantly.
