The Subsidized Killing of Almost 500 Horses in Pennsylvania

As part of the campaign to end horseracing subsidies in Pennsylvania, I have been asked to compile a list of industry victims over the past five years. I reproduce it here. (If you haven’t already signed our PA change.org petition, please do so now.)

  1. Tragic. And, this list doesn’t include the horses euthanized off the track due to injuries, and the horses that end up in kill pens to be cruelly slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. No more taxpayer subsidies!

    • The owners will most likely sell their horses that they cannot make a profit from by racing or breeding to the highest bidder. Depending on the owners situation, the horses could be shipped to a different state for more racing. It’s important to understand that horses are shipped to different locations for racing and training now. It’s also important to understand that horses are sold to killbuyers and shipped to slaughterhouses now. It has always been this way. It is the responsibility of the owners and trainers to do the right things for their own horses, but they choose to cruelly exploit their horses. The owners/trainers choose to exploit and cause injuries and death to their horses as it is now. When the state refuses to subsidize this corrupt horse-killing and gambling business, the owners will find other ways and other places to make their horses suffer. In Idaho, for example, the racing is held at county fairs in the southern part of the state. The number of racing days is probably fewer, but the racing people have still managed to kill racehorses in Idaho.
The die-hard exploiters won’t breed as many horses when the state stops dishing out corporate welfare so the foal crop numbers will continue to decline. They can sell their breeding stock to people in other states that are subsidized. In some cases, the breeding stock might be sold to killbuyers and that is how it has always been.

    • Those valiant horses’ owners will do what they do now – send them to slaughter.

    • They would’ve been better off NOT having been unnaturally, forcibly, been bred, into a situation that is already SHITSHOW

    • Love it when racing supporters come to this site to ask seemingly banal questions — which are really just thinly-disguised attempts to blame US for racing’s disgusting waste of equine life.
Well, audieboru (or Sharon, or whatever you call yourself): the fate of nearly all racehorses remains the same whether these death tracks stay open or get shut down. They’re tossed away like trash, because nobody in racing wants to pay for their care.

    • Your question has been amply and accurately answered, but I have one for you.
What happens to racehorses when the tracks are open?
While they are “hardworking,” “valiant”, and forced to flip a buck for a bunch of parasites?
They are being forced into intense confinement with needles going in and out of their veins, joints, muscles and wherever else they can find a crevice to keep them flipping a buck.
More often than not, especially in the claiming ranks, they are left to suffer in their stalls with chronic ulcerative conditions, pre-existing conditions like fractures, torn muscles/ligaments and respiratory distress to name a few.
They are sent out to die, more or less, in many examples that are posted on this site based on the PP’s since your business deliberately keeps their vet treatment records secret.
So whether your track is open, only due to hundreds of millions in subsidies, or closed it’s all the same, you are all the same and this entire corrupt killing business needs to be thrown on a manure pile where it belongs.

  2. Save horses and end all horse breeding in the cruel and corrupt racing industry.

  3. The solution is actually quite simple, quit forcibly creating more unwanted LIVES.

  4. Q. What is the fate of these hardworking and valiant horses?
    A. They are sent out to die at racetracks and slaughterhouses.
    Q. What was the fate of the 494 hardworking and valiant horses named in the list above?
    A. They were sent out to die at racetracks by their owners and trainers.

For every horse, regardless of how hardworking or how valiant the horse may have been, that was sent out to die at a racetrack, there were several more horses that were sent out to die at slaughterhouses. Some of those horses could have been less than 12 months of age. Not all foals born into the racing industry “make the cut” to become hardworking and valiant racing horses. Many young colts and fillies that do make the cut are brutally handled by their owners, trainers, jockeys and exercise riders to the point where they don’t make the cut to remain hardworking and valiant racehorses after all. Some of these young COLTS & FILLIES are not-yet-named. Hundreds of young, underdeveloped colts and fillies are injured and killed by their racing connections. This practice of ROUTINELY ABUSING HORSES should be punished by law and not propped up by public funds.
I’m going to estimate that for every horse that was sent out to die at a racetrack, there were five or more horses that were sent out to die at slaughterhouses. So that means that approximately 2,470 or more horses born into this racing industry were sent out to die at slaughterhouses during the same time period (2017-2021) that the Four-Hundred Ninety-Four hardworking and valiant horses named above were sent out to die at the racetracks in Pennsylvania.

  5. It is time to stop subsidizing a sport that is responsible for killing over 500 horses. This is a waste of money and an inexcusable tragedy for the horses.
