Several “Bleeders” Last Week

Last week on U.S. flat tracks (racing only):

Young’un “fell, DNF” at Zia
Champion by Design “bled from nostrils” at Parx
Enough Love “vanned off” at Parx
Witch Hunter “vanned off” at Aqueduct
A Real World “vanned off” at Evangeline
Aidanike “vanned off” at Oaklawn
Jackpot Winner “vanned off” at Turfway
Starry Sierra “bled” at Golden Gate
Seven Kingdoms “bled from nostrils” at Turfway
Island Commish “vanned off” at Gulfstream
Bench “bled” at Turfway

While not all the “vanned” end up dead, most do, as borne out by our year-end FOIA reports. But even if death is not the ultimate result, the above are victims nonetheless, suffering painful injuries – in the case of the bleeders, pulmonary hemorrhage – so that some men may gamble, others chase pots of gold. (For any new confirmed deaths during the week, please see our running annual list.)

  1. Injuries and death to the horses is an inherent part of this morally depraved “game” for wagering revenue and purse money. It must be outlawed!!! All government funding to horseracing must be terminated!!! The people who participate in this egregious cruelty must be held accountable. This industry is so unnecessary and insanely barbaric!!!

  2. I totally agree with Wanda Diamond that this horseracing is barbaric and government funding should be terminated. People should be held accountable for this horrible cruelty to the poor horses.
