  1. Hail Michigan “was a faller”. WTF? Sounds like a serious neurological issue that was blatantly ignored. How does anyone with 1/10 of an ounce of any kind of sense put a horse on a racetrack that can’t even walk right?!

    • I don’t know for sure if they mean “faller” the way you are interpreting it, Rebecca, or if it is a euphemism for “the horse fell because of an injury” that for whatever reason the chart writer did not want to elaborate on. What is the point of explaining breakdowns as long as this industry does not absolutely have to explain everything. I mean from the point of view of the track owners and the chart writers.

  2. This list of 552 innocent horses sacrificed by the USA horseracing industry is a national disgrace.
Thank you, Patrick Battuello and your team for your independent investigation, reporting and compiling of this gruesome list of dead horses used for this live animal gambling activity.

  3. It sounds like someone could have shot TAPITENA with a .22 caliber rifle at fairly close range in his stall or a shot of a drug with a syringe. He collapsed (no reason why is stated) and expired in the stall and it shows on Equibase that he was raced on May 31, 2021. He was born in 2018 and was raced 5 times. All 5 races were in 2021 and were Maiden Claiming races. It sounds to me like he was a good candidate for a pleasure riding horse except that he was born into this sick, sadistic sub-culture of heartless heathens looking to exploit the horse as much as they can with no remorse. This industry must be shut down!!!!!!!!

There is no amount of “amazing care” that will stop this sadistic abuse, neglect and killing of racehorses.

        • They will never pay for surveillance cameras Wanda. It costs too much (to install and the consequences the camera would tell..video does not lie)

          • That is why I wish I could have surveillance cameras. I know, it’s a fantasy that can never happen in real life, much like the flies on the walls being able to talk will never happen.

  4. I’ll tell you guys a secret … I never read the kill lists anymore …because, I know I can’t cope with it.

    • Bonnie, I understand. It is too much. I can’t focus on all of the injuries, get the mental pictures of what that would like and imagine what the horses feel. It’s too disturbing. But, at the same time, I don’t want to feel like I’m not giving the horses the remembrance they deserve so I skim through without reliving the trauma or at least try not to dwell on the horrors. It’s tough.

      • What the injuries would be like or look like is what I have to work on not dwelling on too much.

  5. Reading the diagnoses make me SICK. 5-year-old Ventus with multiple CHRONIC fractures? – evidence of all that great care (better care than what the human racing-employed receive, isn’t that right “Backside Girl” or whatever your name is?). Freaking morons.

Recently read a “feel good” story by a racing publication – a 7-year-old gelding is retired (and to “the farm” as opposed to the typical retirement into the slaughter pipeline by way of the shoddy giving away and selling cheaply by those involved in racing’s great “aftercare”). Anyway, only 7 with 48 races – and the trainer exclaims “It’s hard to find a horse that could win 17 races and retire sound.” Ain’t THAT the truth. YET, racing is no different than the running around my own horses do in their pastures? So it’s surprising that my horses, all older than this particular 7-year-old, are still SOUND after running around a mere 48 laps (which they might do over a year’s time)? And AGAIN, evidence of that great care and “low risk” of injury in racing? I’ll say it again – freaking MORONS.

    • Joy, the people who are sucking the life out of the horses calling themselves “HORSEMEN” (which generally speaking includes human beings of both genders, male and female) are NOT TRUE HORSEMEN because they are not practicing TRUE HORSEMANSHIP. They break the rules of true horsemanship.
These so-called horsemen and horsewomen use the term “SOUND” in a very, very, very, very, very l-o-o-s-e sense of the word.
Soundness in horses is something that means a lot more than a horse being able to get by with unsoundness, but can still be able to walk, trot, and gallop, etc.
These so-called horsemen and horsewomen in the racing and wagering business are shady characters looking to make a buck off of the horse and the gullible or the uninformed public. There is no honor among thieves.
When someone in this industry represents a horse to be “sound” after being retired from racing, or when the horse is obviously UNSOUND and still being forced to run on the track but has not catastrophically broken down yet, it is a safe bet to assume that the horse is definitely UNSOUND!!!!!! Just because the horse is still alive and can stand up doesn’t mean that the horse is sound.
Some people would have the nerves cut on a horse with Navicular Disease, as an example. They would use the horse for whatever riding activity as if the horse was “sound” when in fact the horse is UNSOUND. This is just one example. There are so many others.
Being honest about a horse being sound is NOT A STRONG POINT of these so-called “horsemen” in this vile industry.

    • We have two 25 year old mares. 1 of which survived the racing circuit here. She is yet sound & runs around as if she is still a young horse. The other mare survived being starved nearly to death on top of a mountain top with no grass & very little water with packs of coyotes all around as well as mountain lions too! Our sister told us of her plight & we picked her up with our trailer & hauled her to safety at our then leased property. Great care is an oxymoron! Recently like last week, on the last day of racing in the last night of racing the tracks lights failed in the middle of the race!! 2 horses ended up losing their riders with the riders being injured severely. The horses are seen running past the finish line lit up kind of by vehicle headlights! The announcer was incredulous that the brand newly installed track lights failed while the barn lights & other areas still had their lights working!! This we saw on as AP article where they showed the video taken by someone showing what happened. So much for the millions Travis Boersma has spent on a 1/2 mile county bull ring track which in our opinion should never been allowed.
