Last week on U.S. flat tracks (racing only):

Wow Tapit “fell, DNF” at Gulfstream

While not all the “vanned” end up dead, most do, as borne out by our year-end FOIA reports. But even if death is not the ultimate result, the above are victims nonetheless, suffering painful injuries – in the case of the bleeders, pulmonary hemorrhage – so that some men may gamble, others chase pots of gold. (For any new confirmed deaths during the week, please see our running annual list.)

  1. Did anyone else see the video of URBANITE? It was strange and did not show everything. They said he won the race but was not able to go the winner’s circle. But the video I saw did not show what his injury/injuries was/were. It showed him standing up, not fallen. I think he was euthanized.

      • Right, Nancy. This was a claiming race with seven horses running. The claiming price was $20,000 and four horses out of seven were claimed. URBANITE was the only horse in this race to be vanned off. There is not one word in the chart that says why he was vanned off, after coming in first.
