A Kill This Morning at Del Mar; California at 72 Dead on the Year

Irreproachable was killed – “suffered a catastrophic injury” – training at Del Mar this morning. He was four years old and had been under the whip twice, most recently a month ago at that same track. He is the 72nd fatality at a California track this year. That’s 72 dead animals – for $2 bets. How is this even remotely acceptable in a state that proudly bills itself a national leader on animal-welfare issues?

  1. Bo Derek ought to be asked that question about animal welfare issues in the State of California especially regarding the catastrophic injuries and deaths of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race horses.

Like, wow, man! If it weren’t for the “softer, kinder” whips that the jockeys use to WHIP THEIR MOUNTS with multiple times during one race, there could be way more dead horses, right? 😠

  2. Should be no whips or better yet no horse racing that will injure or kill an animal

  3. Authentic had to be eased quickly to avoid a collision with the catastropically injured horse. Baffert was watching from the grandstand and the emergency whistles were sounded.

  4. This totally unacceptable 72 horses and it’s August we still have 4 months to go. One horse dead is not acceptable but understandable but 72 that is animal cruelty and abuse. For $2 bets this is a barbaric sport and the people who support it should be ashamed of themselves for being so greedy that a few bucks is worth more than a life. The people who own and run them you are the worst of the worst I pity you that you can’t see the beauty and love in the very animals that you are so barbaric and cruel to for greed the Golden Idol. May God have mercy on your souls because us humans with hearts 💕 HATE people who abuse helpless creatures all of them. That was a 4 year old horse just a baby when you consider that a horse can live to 25-30 years!!!!

  5. Horse racing is injuring too many horses & it must STOP. Horses are receiving injuries that cannot be fixed, so it MUST STOP…

  6. THESE PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH THESE RACES ONLY DO IT FOR PROFIT, FOR THEIR MENTALLY DERANGED SICK THRILLS, ABUSING THESE MAGNIFICENT BEASTS GOD PUT ON THIS EARTH. THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE WHIPPED, FORCED TO RUN TO THEIR DEATHS AND SEE HOW THEY LIKE IT. THIS IS NOT A SPORT IT IS A COVER UP TO ABUSE/KILL THESE BEAUTIFUL HORSES FOR PROFIT. THESE OWNERS, JOCKEY’s, TRAINERS ARE THE MENTALLY DERANGED OF THE HUMAN SPECIES. STOP THIS ABUSE ONCE AND FOR ALL.

  7. Shut it down! Leave those poor horses to be. Race each other for bets

  8. Thanks for the neverending Breakdown Update, Patrick and Co.. Looks like the CHRB also added a pony death in July to Del Mar’s “fatality free” races so far this meet. They love to crow about “No RACING deaths,” because they managed it, for the first time ever, last summer. “Training and other deaths don’t count,” they reason. (If you could call making full use of the Dead Horse Shell Game reasoning, that is.)

But their newfound racing safety streak will inevitably come crashing down to earth, just as it did last fall, immediately following their “safe for horses” summer meet. Nov. 10, 2019: THREE fatal breakdowns, in three separate races, on one horrible day. Oops.

Guess all that so-called horse safety had just been a happy accident, then. Right Del Mar?

  9. Horseracing must be stopped NOW! There is too much death of these magnificent animals.

  10. Have sent countless emails and called many times to Newsom.and Feinstein. Never get a response from either one. Obviously, we might have the reputation of caring for animals but horses are not on that list. It is totally frustrating and heartbreaking.

  11. THIS IS ANIMAL.ABUSE!!

  12. Horse racing is heinously cruel and should be banned. Horses are NOT expendable! They suffer abuse, neglect and murder. It is CRIMINAL and needs to be stopped. Hardly any of them are “retired” to live in peace for their hard work and earnings. Instead they are butchered and sold to Europe for horse meat. That is immoral and just wrong. It disgusts me beyond words.

  13. It’s evil. These animals are supposed to have the best of everything including and most importantly Veterinary care. Is that all a lie???? So beautiful and yet so abused.

    • The racing industry “provides” so many catastrophically injured and killed horses’ bodies to the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for necropsies as far as I know and I don’t know everything. It is a sickening thought that a university would “welcome” (if that’s what they do?) the bodies of multiple dead horses as a “learning tool” if you will. I don’t know the whole ugly story here but it certainly begs the question.

  14. The cruel horseracing industry must take care of the horses it exploits! Since it uses these beautiful animals then discards them to slaughter when done with them the federal government must intervene and take oversight and create regulation to instill animal welfare regulations including foal limits race limits and retirement reguluirements in the horse breeding and racing industsy- and amateur backyard horse owners What a national and international disgrace!
