  1. After reading this – I noted this is partial list of tracks. I would think the real tally would be almost double of this. Thank you, Patrick, for the untiring work you do to track all these deaths and for exposing them.

  2. Yet another Death List.
This is so vile and so heartbreaking.
I absolutely despise anybody who continues to participate in and support such intentional harm and killing onto these racehorses.
These are not “accidents” because every single thing they do to these horses is the cause of their demise.
They keep doing it nothing has changed.
I see racehorse killer got access to Del Mar – you see people there are no changes not even the MINIMUM protections are afforded to these racehorses as they are continually sent back to these racehorse killers.
Simply breeding them to die is vile and the vile people who do this you ought to be a shame of yourselves.
I wouldn’t expect you to hang your heads in shame like normal, rational people because you can’t possibly be normal or compassionate to do and see what’s going on.
So sorry for all racehorses on this list and for all others one step away from dying.

    • As a person who lives in Del Mar, I think it’s a horrible thing. What’s even worse is seeing how many people flock to the racetrack to watch these animals be tortured.

  3. So difficult to try and process the numbers of deaths. Thank you for doing this hard work.

  4. I am curious about the ratio of California bred horses, to other area bred horses. And I’m not sure it the horse racing industry has a lot of in breeding. I just hate this for these magnificent animals.

  5. Humans must stop using horses to make money – horses should be treasured as they are magnificent.

  6. Thank you for your work on this. Do we have an number for the total deaths this year? I would like to put a number in a post to share on my social media.

  7. Thank you for your work on this. Do we have a number for the total deaths this year? I would like to use a number in my social media posts.

  8. I only counted the first 2 months and 100 horses already on this partial list….It needs 2 stop.

  9. Can someone tell me how in the hell a horse can sever their spinal cord?
Even Grand Prix level show jumpers don’t suffer leg injuries like this, and you would think with all the stresses of jumping those 17 hand plus Warmbloods would be snapping legs off left, right, and center. Like I’ve said before, NO other equine “sport” produces mass casualties and misery like the racing industry, unless you want to count rodeo, but that’s a different ball of shit altogether.
And I see some pansy- assed judge lifted the ban on Hottendorfer. Well, why not? He’s no worse than any of the other monsters in the racing industry, he just had the bad luck to be available when they needed a scapegoat to placate the barrage of questions. And of course HSUS and PETA are keeping quiet because they’re completely sackless and are probably getting some sort of kick back like all everyone else.
Time has run out for so many of these beautiful young horses who were treated like disposable chattel by breathing bags of filth. I just cannot understand how people can see horses literally break apart right in front of them and think nothing of it. Can see the agony and terror in their eyes and walk away with a handful of money and not a care or conscience in the world.

  10. You need to read what people write on horse-racing message boards, like the Paulick Report. The denial is unbelievable. They blame PETA, anyone they label as an ‘animal activist, Horseracing Wrongs for reporting the grisly death toll & reasons for the deaths, the average person, whom they say has no clue about racing & how well cared for all racehorses are, etc., etc. They call banning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer who had a record number of breakdowns in a short time from having horses at tracks all wrong & that he was a scapegoat. They defend & defend. And horses continue to die. They cannot see the truth that’s right there in front of them. Some of the arguments they present would be laughable if it wasn’t for the fact that horses are dying! No one in horse-racing can agree on anything and things just get worse. The blame is squarely on the shoulders of those who have been doing wrong to these beautiful animals for decades. It’s time to shut this hideous sport down.

    • Agree, S., they’re cannibalizing themselves now, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of horse killers;)

  11. Love and respect you ALL so much. I honestly felt so hopeless and all alone on this issue as I became distantly familiar with the horrors of horse racing. I even bought myself a real, genuine, OTTB after finding out what this industry is all about. Couldn’t be happier with my big, goofy lug of a pleasure horse, but I also know what a rarity he is; he’s been snatched from the jaws of the monstrous racing death machine that chews up and spits out thoroughbreds like they’re the excrement scraped off the bottom of racehorse owners’ shoes. There’s no credit that I can take for his “rescue.” It’s entirely happenstance that his life was spared, while literally THOUSANDS of his stablemates have been broken-down/euthanized, or — as most often occurs — claimed/dumped/slaughtered by the aforementioned death machine.
I will never give his former connections the satisfaction of knowing that my survivor is getting the daily love, pleasure, companionship, and care that ALL these horses deserve. Racing creeps would just use this one, anecdotal instance as justification for continuation of their death machine. They’d prattle on with their self-congratulatory insistence that “aftercare” is something THEY choose to engage in on a regular basis. They do not. When, on the rare occasion these success stories occur, it is always through the efforts of truly caring — NON-racing — horse people. Sadly, we are no match for the death machine. But, through the efforts of this site and its supporters, the machine is being dismantled and will ultimately be relegated to the scrap-heap of animal abuse history.

    • Bless you for saving one of these beautiful innocents. Hug him for me and tell him I’m so glad he made it to a life he deserves.

  12. Sickening!
And those who have the power to intervene, continue to do NOTHING.

  13. OMG! This is beyond belief! It is like living, breathing creatures, are nothing more than a scrap of paper. We will never learn how to treat the other creatures who share this planet with us. We are part of a circle , not above it.Let’s end this now!

  14. The horse racing business has been operating with total impunity and lack of transparency for years while collecting billions in profits via casino/corporate welfare.
The apologists, defenders are lashing out at opponents to horse racing because they have been exploiting and killing racehorses for so long now and they don’t like it when they are held accountable.
Strip away their inaccurate claims of this being a “sport” and “entertainment” and what you have left is a voiceless, defenseless sentient racehorses being turned into disposable gambling chips to fill their wagering coffers.
It’s sad, unacceptable, vile and it needs to end.

  15. These horses are treated like race cars. They keep using them to perform and when they are injured or killed throw them away and NEXT. It is an assembly line of inevitable death. Those that survive are eventually sent for slaughter. It is up to the trainers, veterinarians, and jockeys who exploit them and then turn a blind eye to speak up and be a voice for these animals. They must be made accountable through laws. Horses should not be treated like livestock. Another facet is this is a gamblers sport and many people who go to these races are addicted. No animals should be used to perpetuate an addiction like dog and horse racing. The only way to stop this is through laws that animals have rights also and need protected. Where are the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts who use horses as team logos? They have the money, power and media attention to make a difference to take a stand to stop this inhumane exploitation and to change laws.

  16. SHUT DOWN the DEPRAVEDLY INDIFFERENT, CRUEL, HEINOUS industry of HORSE-RACING — FOREVER — so much proof has been presented regarding their suffering and premature deaths — let’s SHUT DOWN THIS INDUSTRY – so many ways to make money — NO EXCUSES!
