My intention in this post is not to troll you, but to ask if you know what happens to rejected thoroughbreds? Stopping horse racing will leave 1000’s of thoroughbred horses subject to either neglect or they could be sent to slaughter. I’m not sure if you can see this post on Facebook, but a rejected thoroughbred was neglected by its owner and released into a wilderness area where she almost died from dehydration and being run down by wild stallions. At least if they racing they have a purpose? I’m not sure. https://www.facebook.com/1097078991/posts/10217652376756682?s=1097078991&sfns=mo
Cordially Dina Boyer http://www.dinaboyerphotography.com dinaboyer2@gmail.com

Dina, Horseracing will not suddenly come to a close overnight. It will contract – or to be more precise, continue to contract: I have documented a net loss of 34 racetracks in the U.S. just since 2000. The Jockey Club’s annual “foal crop” – the number of baby Thoroughbreds being registered each year – is roughly half what it was in 1990. All other relevant metrics are also down – racedays, races, “field sizes,” etc. See, contraction.
Now, as to your question of where those horses who are left will go, I turn it back on you – where, pray tell, do they go now? The vast majority – 15,000 or more annually – of “retired” racehorses are brutally and violently slaughtered at the end of their productivity. Yes, that’s right, this multi-billion dollar industry, littered with loads of obscenely wealthy people, is sending most of its erstwhile “family members” to the abattoirs to be shackled, slashed, bled-out, and butchered. So you see, Dina, your question is grossly misdirected.
Thank-you Patrick.
I would also add that it’s incumbent upon this industry to figure that out and it’s incumbent upon our politicians to pass a mandatory bill requiring a minimum of 10% of sales, wagering, and casino profits to take care of them.
Since this industry ignores their plight the only way to hold them accountable is to legislate.
Moreover, the fact that the foal crop has decreased by half translates to not enough horses to fill races and their wagering coffers.
So what does that mean?
The shortage of horses to increase their obscene profits is being paid for by the bones, backs, and lives of racehorses.
Just peruse the Equibase charts and there you will find the badly abused racehorses of this vile business who are getting little and little rest, who are repeatedly beaten into the starting gates, who are being starved in their stalls, cardiovascular collapse etc etc.
It’s getting worse and nobody is protecting them – nobody – not even our solely inadequate Felony Animal Cruelty laws.
TO PATRICK
Thank You Patrick for your incredible work on exposing the horrific abuse at the race track of the horses.
AS you know, in April of 2015 I visually witnessed the absolute horror of horse slaughter on a website in Canada from an undercover Investigation . I saw graphic video of horses being brutally murdered in Canada including racehorses and I have never been able to get that video image out of my mind to this day.
TO DINA
i strongly recommend that Dina go to this website and look at the videos herself. then she will see for herself how incredibly hypocritical horse racing owners are since EVERY single horse that is put into a horse race runs the risk of ending up in a horrific death .

Over 4 million horses a year are being brutally murdered each year in horse slaughter-That includes racehorses.
Horse Owners and Horse Trainers actually TEXT KILL BUYERS to come pick the injured horses up at the racetrack and ship them to be murdered/slaughtered when they no longer want them. A very well known horse race owner told me that directly.
2019
PETA’s latest breaking investigation found that the South Korean horse-racing industry sends thousands of horses (including imported American racehorses and their offspring) to slaughter when they’re no longer wanted for racing or breeding..
you can see Yourself in this shocking video footage, PETA filmed workers beating panicked horses, including on the face, with poles to force them into the slaughterhouse and then killing them in front of each other. Those confined to waiting trucks could do little but paw and whinny, looking for an escape from the smell of death and the loud screams of pigs, who were also being killed.
Here is the video. This is what happens to racehorses including american race horses

WHY ARE GOOD YOUNG RACEHORSES ENDING UP AS MEAT 7,000 miles away in SOUTH KOREA ?
ACE KING- ALL THAT CHASE, a big chestnut son of Power Broker, and MYEONGGA JEWANG , a bay son of YES ITS TRUE, had two wins in 18 races between them. They were reunited last December, the ninth and 10th horses to enter the Nonghyup slaughterhouse that day.
Among his Ocala class, now four years old, Ace King wasn’t alone. Of the 50 bought at that auction that were sent to Korea—one stayed in the States to race—14 are already dead. At least seven were killed at the same slaughterhouse in Jeju. (Ocala didn’t return several messages asking for comment.)

HORSE RACING KILLS-
SENT TO SLAUGHTER
June 23rd 2019
Meet Seungja Yechan (“Praise the Winner” in Korean). He raced four times and was scratched from his fifth race. His retirement was a death sentence.
Unlike some other horses used for racing, Australian-born Praise the Winner never earned a penny – unless you count the $55 per kilogram charged for his flesh at the supermarket.
In South Korea, thousands of imported horses like Praise the Winner are sent to slaughter when they’re no longer wanted for racing or breeding.
Eyewitness investigators filmed workers beating panicked horses – including on the face – with poles to force them into the abattoir and then killing them in front of each other. Those confined to waiting lorries could do little but paw and whinny, looking for an escape from the smell of death and the loud screams of pigs, who were also being killed.
NO HORSE
deserves to be exploited, abused, and slaughtered.
Please urge the Korea Racing Authority to stop supporting horse slaughter and to develop a comprehensive horse retirement system:
PETITION FROM PETA
https://secure.peta.org.au/page/42450/action/1?utm_source=PETA%20AU::E-Mail&utm_medium=Alert&utm_campaign=0619::ent::PETA%20AU::E-Mail::Korea%20Resend::::aa%20em&ea.url.id=3630308
Dear Dr Kim,
I just watched PETA’s video exposing the horrors at the Nonghyup abattoir on Jeju Island.
Investigators filmed some of the thousands of panicked castoffs from the South Korean horse-racing industry being beaten with poles – many of them in the face – as workers tried to force them into the abattoir. Some were killed in full view of their companions. These are violations of South Korea’s Animal Protection Act.
Animal-behaviour expert Dr Temple Grandin reviewed PETA’s footage and condemned the behaviour. “The handling of the horses during truck unloading was not acceptable,” she said. “Hitting a horse on the face is abusive.”
I respectfully urge the KRA to stop supporting and promoting the horsemeat industry and to commit to developing a comprehensive retirement system modelled on the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance in the US. If the KRA redirected just half a per cent of horse-racing wagers per year to equine retirement – a tiny fraction of the profit it makes off the backs of these horses – thousands of retired racing horses could be spared a hideous death.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Ryan
Kathleen, thanks for sharing.
However, I would suggest that PETA take a strong stance AGAINST horse racing.
I suggest that PETA get all their supporters in California to sign a petition to shut this vile business down.
Instead, they seem to be vacillating between shutting it down and reforms.
I can only guess that they received money from pro-horse racing entities.
I know that PETA has done incredible work on behalf of animals, but I can’t accept what they’ve done here with horse racing.
They have the power to save over 20,000 racehorses per year from horrible suffering.
Yet, they are still working with pro-horse racing entities.
I can’t accept this, and HRW is the only group taking a strong stance and PETA should be supporting this.
