20 Dead Racehorses in Arizona

Through a FOIA request to the Arizona Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills on that state’s tracks through April 30:

Popyhowuspelcupcak, Jan 1, Turf R – “fracture left front leg”
Tribal Hero, Jan 5, Turf T – “fracture left front leg”
Cause for Eviction, Jan 8, Turf R – “fracture pelvis”
Velocitation, Jan 13, Turf R – “fracture left front leg fetlock”
Unusually Striking, Jan 16, Turf R – “fracture left front leg”
Rose Dynasty, Jan 20, Turf R – “fracture spine or pelvis”
Dancin N Moonlight, Feb 2, Turf T – “cannon bone fracture”
Majesty Marie, Feb 9, Rillito T – “fracture left front cannon bone”
Junior G Man, Feb 20, Turf R – “fracture right front fetlock”
Serbian Syclone, Feb 25, Turf R (euthanized Apr 14) – “fracture front leg”
P T Bruiser, Feb 27, Turf T – “fracture right carpus”
Vergelito Two, Mar 3, Turf T – “fracture shoulder”
Ls Power, Mar 31, Turf R – “fracture spine”
Redneck Humor, Apr 7, Turf R – “fracture right front leg”
Lion Command, Apr 15, Turf R (euthanized Apr 16) – “fracture right front leg”
Caramelo P, Apr 28, Turf R – “fracture left rear leg”

In addition, these still-very-much-active racehorses died on track grounds from what the industry craftily calls “non-racing” causes. Technically true, perhaps, but morally they are no less casualties of this vile business than the ones above.

L ‘s Choice, Jan 10, Turf – “illness – lungs”
Top Hat Wildcat, Jan 23, Turf – “laceration abdomen”
Jubilance, Jan 27, Turf – “flipped in stall, hit head, spinal cord trauma”
Surely a Bullet, Feb 4, Turf – “weight loss, cancer”

  1. So sad. Thank you for keeping up with the documentation and fact finding. Its powerful.

  2. Beause because babies are just that –
    BABIES!
Their bones are not closed or developed. It is like asking a two year old child to run a marathon! It is cruel!!!!!!

  3. OMG so we have moved from Santa Anita now to Arizona so we can all read about some more “kills” on these tracks. I don’t give a shit if it is in a race or on the property – it is again the “horse” abusers at work – slaughtering off some more of these wonderful animals. These races all need to be banned and the race tracks shut down – everyone needs to be reading these constant postings to see just how incredibly bad these situations really are. This is just horrific and the forms of death so incredibly horrible. Humans are the worst abusers of all of the animals – ban this bullshit and get rid of these abuser.

  4. The industry calls the deaths of
    L’s Choice
    Top Hat Wildcat
    Jubilance
    Surely A Bullet
    and numerous other racehorses
    “non-racing” causes of death.
If a horse is registered as a racehorse and is active (has not been officially retired) e.g. racing, training, spelling (layoff), having medical treatment, or the like, then that horse is a racehorse death statistic.
The fact that the horse did not die in a race on the day (or subsequently as a result of injuries suffered in a race) does not mean that it was a non-racing death. If a registered racehorse is on racetrack premises or private training premises, on transport or wherever he is for that matter, his death (no matter what the circumstances) is a “racing” death.

  5. Surely A Bullet
Yes, a bullet between the eyes into your brain would’ve been a blessing for you, buddy.
But you were in the hands of despicable human beings who watched you suffer from an insidious disease in lieu of putting you out of your misery.
How much does a bullet cost?
    A few bucks.
Nup, let’s just watch a helpless creature suffer and die.
    SICK

  6. This needs to end. These horses are babies. They run while on all the drugs pumped into them to run through the pain. This is animal cruelty.
Animals are not ours to be used for entertainment or to make money.
