History at The Belmont Stakes: Over 150 Activists Turn Out for Single Largest Protest at a Racetrack Anywhere, Ever

All the great social-justice movements in our nation’s history have begun in the streets. Protest. Saturday, over 150 of some of the AR Movement’s finest came out en masse to stand and speak for the abused horses of Belmont Park – indeed, of racetracks the world over. The passion and energy was palpable, the scene, as one track patron put it to the Daily News (coverage here), “intense,” as activists educated with banners, signs, leaflets, and, of course, an unfaltering stream of chants.

Thank you one and all for making this the single largest protest at a horseracing venue anywhere, ever (the previous record was at Saratoga Race Course at each of the past two Travers Stakes). And the pressure only mounts from here: Horseracing Wrongs is, or will soon be, sponsoring protests at 21 tracks in 16 states. When horseracing’s final chapter is written – and it will be written – I believe we will come to see Santa Anita as the tipping point; while I’m under no illusions of a quick victory, I am utterly convinced that the endgame has begun.

  1. Thank You Patrick for the following summary. I agree completely.

    END HORSERACING

“The problem is horseracing – 2,000 killed racing or training across America every year; hundreds more dying in their stalls; multiple thousands brutally and violently bled-out and butchered annually once their so-called careers have come to an end. No investigations, no reforms, no compromises – end horseracing.”

  2. PLEASE help us to END HORSE SLAUGHTER AS WELL.

Call to Action on H.R. 961
Calling all residents of Colorado, Connecticut, DC and Florida.

Are you ready to take part on behalf of horses and help get us the necessary cosponsors to blast H.R. 961, The SAFE Act of 2019, out of Committee?

When The SAFE Act becomes law it will totally abolish the practice of slaughtering horses for human consumption. Imagine the impact on the lives of our Quarter Horses (America’s Horse), Thoroughbreds and Wild Horses & Burros. There is so very much at stake.

    Magic Number — 290
    Here’s how we do it.

We need a minimum of 290 to take advantage of the newly instituted Commons Calendar Rule which will move the Bill onto the House Floor for debate and vote.

    As of June 10, 2019, H.R. 961 has 149 cosponsors.

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A second horse in two days and 29th overall has died at Santa Anita, where management has chosen to continue racing for the rest of the current meet.

Truffalino collapsed in the final stages of the third race on turf Sunday. A track spokesman says the 3-year-old filly died of a heart attack.

She was trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella and was ridden by Joe Talamo. Truffalino had one win in six career starts and earnings of $53,602, according to Equibase.

A day earlier, Formal Dude pulled up in the 10th race and was vanned off the track after breaking down nearing the finish line. Tiago Pereira was aboard the favorite trained by Phil D’Amato. The 4-year-old gelding was winless in six career starts and had earnings of $15,127, according to Equibase. Formal Dude was euthanized.

The California Horse Racing Board has recommended that the track suspend the remaining days of its meet, which is set to end June 23. However, Santa Anita management has chosen to continue racing.

  5. I am so hopeful that racing will end! I will be available to protest in New England.

  6. Great demonstration at the track, plus it looked so very professional as well – we definitely need more of these to stop this barbaric sport. Thanks to all of you who turned out in “love” for these beautiful equines.

  7. HORSES’ LIVES ARE at STAKE — PLEASE, PARTICIPATE any way you can.

  8. Glad I was part of your group. I will take part in your demonstration again. Continue the fight . Never give up the horses need you to be their voice.

  9. Please let’s us know where and when you plan to protest at other tracks. My group wants to participate. We love horses and want to see an end to horse racing, and horse slaughter.
Please investigate the thousands of broodmares who die on breeding farms each year. After these mares have finished their racing careers they usually go to the breeding shed. They are continuously in foal. No rest in between foaling. Many of them die while foaling ,foals included. Someone should look into this and stop the horror that goes on at private breeding farms.
