The Victims of Portland Meadows, 2018

Through a FOIA request to the Oregon Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills at Portland Meadows in 2018.

Sexy Momma, January 7, Portland R
“ankle fracture”

Captain Shaddock, January 30, Portland R
“ankle fracture”

Storm the Channel, September 12, Portland T
“fractured cannon bone”

Memphis Mobster, October 30, Portland R
“pastern fracture” (11 years old, 80th race)

Bellicose Boy, November 10, Portland T
“cannon fracture”

Ozark Daredevil, November 12, Portland R (euthanized November 19)
“injury that a week later resulted in euthanasia”

Hot Tub, November 27, Portland R
“ankle fracture” (8 years old, 65th race)

Coming in Hot, December 4, Portland R
“sudden death/collapse due to circulatory failure”

To the Brink, December 16, Portland R
“shoulder injury”

Polished Rock, December 31, Portland T
“fractured ankle” (finished last five times in final six races)

In addition, this still-very-much-active racehorse died on track grounds from what the industry craftily calls a “non-racing” cause. Technically true, perhaps, but morally she is no less a casualty of this vile business than the ones above.

Gold On Tap, September 9, Portland
“died in stall due to reaction to a vitamin injection by trainer’s vet” (two years old)

  1. Well, I feel really stupid. I thought Portland Meadows had been closed some time ago, and I’m appalled that they continue to kill our precious, beautiful horses.
