  1. Emerald Downs, a track we have been told by an old experienced horsemen who said,” Emerald is to hard on horses and has too high a break down rate”. This was told us by a Mr. Sykes several years ago. We also have noted that the Muckelshoot tribe now own/ operate the facility and for this particular race contributed $1750 of the purse monies.Too bad that they don`t use their monies for something better than the ongoing support of racing. We feel eventually Emerald will become a Racino.since Emerald is located on ground that was originally part of the tribes ancestral home.

  2. Business as usual in the horseracing industry.
28 deaths in just 1 week and I make no apologies if even one horse survived because death is just around the corner in the slaughterhouse when a horse suffers a career ending injury.
    Horseracing is legal.
    Ah yes ‘legal’
Moral and ethical are way above ‘legal’.
Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s right.
Thank you, Patrick for doing what you do on horseracing Wrongs.

  3. This is legitimized animal cruelty.
This is a cruelty circus, and a death camp justified with tradition.
The deaths are window dressed with fancy hats, mint juleps, alcohol, and the portrayal of wealth.
Rich or poor all racehorses are subjected to whipping/beating, doping, dumping, and/or dying.
These necessary operating procedures are cruel, and inhumane.
If they make it out alive, then a kill auction/slaughterhouse awaits most of them.
This industry also contributes to the environmental destruction of our planet as loads of methane gas is emitted into our atmosphere contributing to global warming.
Moreover, there are hundreds of chemicals being flushed down the drains of racetracks on a daily basis directly into the sewage system.
The environmental aspect is often overlooked, and goes unabated.
When was the last time soil samples were taken around racetracks? Probably never.
I’m sure the boys take care of that.
When was the last time water samples were taken from the drainage on the racetracks? Probably never.
While industries are legally mandated to comply with animal welfare statutes and environmental laws, this business has been flying under the radar for far too long now.
This business is unnecessary suffering, and environmental wastage from the start to the finish.
The slaughterhouses are an environmental disaster. The blood ponds around the main slaughterhouse outside of Calgary, Alberta seeps into the ground water.
The smell can be smelt from miles away – the smell of death and destruction.
This industry is based not only on the exploitation of voiceless racehorses, but also exploits Mexican labor, and our environment as well.
All this death, and destruction for racehorses to run in circles for stupid bets?
    Are you kidding me?
My thoughts and heart goes out to all racehorses KILLED IN ACTION this last week.
Thanks to Patrick, Nicole, and all people who comment, who educate, and to all the brave peaceful demonstrators.
We will shut this death, and destruction down.

  4. Any more details/info on Miss Special Regard, Santa Rosa, “fell, DNF” on Aug 12? I know of her going down, but don’t know the outcome and am trying to find out. I don’t see her on the list of horses killed, so I have some hope.

    • I had contacted our local newspaper here in Santa Rosa, and after some inquiring with the track, they received confirmation that she was euthanized. The track vet said that she had a broken leg and nothing could be done for her. So sad…. Please add her to your list of causalities. :(

    • Thank you, Eric for contacting the newspaper and seeking out the truth about yet another innocent horse suffering an excruciatingly painful catastrophic limb injury and then euthanased. Although euthanasia is fairly quick it still takes a few minutes and is also distressing for the horse. In most cases neither a pain killer nor a sedative is administered before the lethal needle. With a planned euthanasia, the horse is usually given a sedative first to assist him.
