Three Horses “Jump” to Their Deaths at Ellerslie – Within Two Hours of One Another

Ellerslie Racecourse (New Zealand) ran four “jumps” races Monday. One horse was killed in three of the four. Yes, that’s three dead animals in four races: 5-year-old Tu Meta Peta in the 1st, 6-year-old Musashi in the 3rd, 7-year-old Bahhton in the 4th.

In a New Zealand Herald article, Auckland Racing Club chief executive Cameron George reacted thus: “…statistically where do you draw the line? It’s not in anyone’s vision that we want to see horses that have fatal injuries, but we sit very well compared to all forms of sport.” A blatant lie, of course. But it gets worse: “We had 11 deaths on the roads [this weekend], does that mean everyone is going to stop driving? I wouldn’t think so.” As for the horses, George says “they enjoy it.” The “it” he refers to is being whip-forced to run – fast – and jump over man-made obstacles.

Mr. George, you are an obscenity.

Then this from jumps trainer John Wheeler, who was present Monday (Stuff): “People like me, who have had horses all their lives, love horses more than any animal rights person. We accept the risk that comes with it, and it hurts when it happens, but that’s part of it.” And finally, “Where you have livestock, you have dead stock.”

Mr. Wheeler, you, too, are an obscenity.

  1. Not really related to this post specifically, but I see your site doesnt really cover anything about other horse sports like polo, cross-country, show jumping, etc. Is there a reason why?

    • Stephen, we stand against all animal exploitation – including, obviously, those “sports” you mention. Unfortunately, irrefutable data – which is our calling card here – is very hard (almost impossible) to come by on the other equine industries.

  2. It’s amazing how some humans can be so cavalier about the suffering and deaths of animals that these same humans profess to “love” and care for.
These humans can only appreciate pain when its their own skin in the “game”.

  3. Hay. McFly!
“You have livestock; you have dead livestock it’s part of racing. ” so stop racing stop dead livestock. Why should they die for you to bake money from there death? Racing need to be criminalized when causing death.

    • Totally agree.
All connections of any racehorse who dies on the track, either during training or racing, should negate automatic animal cruelty charges.
This industry has been flying under the legal radar for way too long now.
This blog exposes the horrific facts, and us ex-insiders further exposes the ugly truths about this despicable cruelty circus, and death camp.
      It’s got to go.

  4. SICKENING deaths for these horses and this is what happens in jumps racing. And the pro jumps racing fraternity unashamedly declare that it is a great “spectacle” and the horses just absolutely “love” it.

The inexcusable killing, maiming and torturing of jumps horses in this antiquated abhorrent “sport” has no place in today’s society. It is an unconscionable act to force innocent horses to partake when jockeys, trainers, owners, vets, race club officials, the relevant racing authorities and the racing industry in general, have full knowledge that there’s a high risk of horses falling, being injured and suffering an excrutiatingly painful death.

  5. These lunatics’ comments are repulsive, enough to make me want to vomit. For many years, John Wheeler has taken jumps horses over to Australia to compete and of course not all of them have returned to New Zealand because they either suffered career ending injuries or died. These races are conducted over a very long distance, the horses are beaten with a whip, the horses often cannot even sight the obstacle, jockeys sometimes haven’t prepared the horse properly for the jump and horse smashes over it, the horses are crowded, galloping at fast speed whilst trying to negotiate jumps when they’re seriously fatigued and they often fall. Yes, John Wheeler is true to form with his vile comments and he has no problem whatsoever with horses being sacrificed “that’s part of it”. If it “hurt” him as he alleges, then he would’ve walked away from training jumps horses many decades ago, but no, he truly enjoys it and therefore he is a sadist.
