71-Start Mare Crashes Into Rail at Belmont – Dead

7-year-old Blue Sixty Four died at Belmont Monday from… well, allow the Gaming Commission to explain: “crashed into rail and fell while training; sedated and stood up; ambulanced to barn; treated for head trauma; seized in afternoon – euthanized.”

“Crashed into rail – head trauma” – dead.

“Blue Sixty Four” was made on April 19, 2008. Still very much a pubescent, she was put to the whip for the first time in a July ’11 race at Saratoga. 70 more would follow. Horrible enough, but then this: For the last 2 1/2 years of her “career,” BSF was exclusively a claimer – 50 consecutive races in which she was up “For Sale” prior to the start. Owner to owner, trainer to trainer, barn to barn – a thing to be passed around. To top it off, in those final 50 races, she finished 4th or below 44 times.

This is horseracing.

  1. This report just does not make sense but does confirm the grosS ineptitude of those using horses for gain. At every roundup, there is a case of a wild horse slamming into the trap panels at roundup and suffering broken neck or head trauma such that its death is then. I have a sick feeling that this mare was in a desperate frame of mind, suffering anonymously to have hit the railing, after so many races she knew the layout. But then her callous handlrs made her walk and caged her in her stall and then more than likely left her alone in a noisy environment until her body finished her living on this Earth prematurely. Living as a free thinking being – she had at least another 12 maybe more years of idyllic peace.

    • I totally agree janwindsong. How could this mare NOT have been in a desperate frame of mind suffering
anonymously. She knew her job but couldn’t do it.

    • janwindsong…thank you for putting into words the thoughts I had about this poor mare. I don’t cry about every death anymore – not that I don’t mourn their suffering and death or that I don’t care – but for this mare?…by heart just broke. They used and used and used her…then she suffered and died alone.

  2. Another beautiful creature dead, and a horrible death at that. This poor baby probably had brain damage from crashing into the rail, and that is why he seized. This sport cannot die fast enough. It just keeps taking and taking and killing one after the other.

If you people want to be entertained why don’t you try crashing yourself into a rail at 30 miles an hour, and tell me how you feel afterward. Every $2. bet is a ticket to a horses, pain, suffering, misery, and for some, their lives. How can you sleep at night knowing that you contributed to the abuse and death of a magnificent, defenseless creature. Why don’t you stay home tonight and save a life.

R.I.P. Blue Sixty Four, your worst days are behind you now, run free baby, run free…..
