Del Mar Closes Meet With Yet Another Kill (Tirpitz); Summer’s Carnage Stands at (At Least) 18

In an altogether fitting end to its summer meet, Del Mar lost yet another horse yesterday. After “falling” and being “vanned off” in the 3rd, 3-year-old Tirpitz was, according to Fox Sports, euthanized back in the barn. (Fox, of course, only reported on this because the jockey banged up his shoulder – headline begins, “Famed jockey injured…”) Tirpitz makes the summer’s toll at least 18 (horses who either died on Del Mar grounds or while being trained off-site for upcoming Del Mar races).

These are the ones we know about:

6-year-old Fit to Rule, July 25, Del Mar 2

5-year-old Rush In, July 26, Del Mar 4

2-year-old Arranmore Girl, August 6, Del Mar, training

3-year-old Urloveneverfails, August 7, Del Mar 4

6-year-old Peppy Bolly, August 9, Del Mar 9

6-year-old Pure Tactics, August 23, Del Mar 8

5-year-old Divine Tale, August 30, Del Mar 10

3-year-old Love On the Road, September 6, Del Mar 5

3-year-old Tirpitz, September 7, Del Mar 3

This is Del Mar. This is horseracing.

  1. DEL MAR RACETRACK “cool as ever” mmm…. well the horses don’t think so!

DEL MAR the racetrack you go to to watch horses die!

TIRPITZ a three year old gelding

According to equibase.com, connections as of last start were:
    JOCKEY: Corey Nakatani
    TRAINER: J Eric Kruliac
    OWNER: Kings River Ranch
    BREEDER: Bridlewood Farm

It was this horse’s 5th start only and in his 4th start he weakened and came home 7th.
For just 4 starts he earned $18,670. Money for connections and what did this young horse get from this gambling activity –

DEATH and a very undignified one at that!

Death no. 18 – these deaths are never ending, they are a constant!
