In the 1st race at Penn National last night, Summer Mesa “broke down” – “humanely euthanized” (Equibase). It was the 2-year-old’s first time under the whip. In the very next race, 4-year-old Stormy Stepper also “broke down” – almost assuredly dead.
No more bets, no more races; no more races, no more kills. Please play slots or scratch-offs instead. Let the animals be.
RIP Summer Mesa and Stormy Stepper your days of torment are over unlike so many others such as Jill’s Reflection who will make her 51st start today. She is entered in the 10th race at Gulfstream . She is a 4 yr. old filly and has averaged 25 races a year since she first raced in May 2013. Her future does not look bright.
PS I posted about Jill’s Reflection already but it is worth repeating. I hope you will excuse the repetition, Patrick. I’m outraged that this form of abuse is totally accepted in this business.
I agree, Rose. It’s a sick feeling to come to the realization that not existing at all is better than living the life of a racehorse – especially the low-level claimers.
And thank you for repeating the information about Jill’s Reflection. You are not alone in your outrage, Rose. I DETEST this damned industry and I am continually sickened by those who support it.

Racing to the Grave:
This past summer 16 horses died in Del Mar. This is the extended season of three more weeks of death and injury.
Horses begin training or are already racing when their skeletal systems are still growing and are unprepared to handle the pressures of competition racing on a hard track at high speeds. One study on injuries at racetracks concluded that one horse in every 22 races suffered an injury that prevented him or her from finishing a race, while another estimated that 3 thoroughbreds die every day in North America because of catastrophic injuries during races.
We will meet inside the parking lot, in front of the entrance to the Thoroughbred Club.
